I recently bought a '69 Chevelle SS and am in the process of getting it back to its original condition. I have two problems. The speedometer and the gas gauge don't work. I was curious as to what the best way is to go about this problem. Do I need to replace the fuel sending unit/speedometer cable or could it be more advanced than that? Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks,
Jeremy

You have 2 different problems that are not related to each other. The speedometer is strictly mechanical, while the fuel gage is electrical.
On the speedometer, try disconnecting the cable from the transmission and spinning it by hand. See if the gage moves a little. Could be a worn cable up where it goes into the speedometer. Maybe look at that. Replacement cables are not that expensive. Maybe try that as the next step.
On the fuel gage, you need to isolate why it doesn't work. Take a look at this and see if that gets you started. http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref18.html
