I've always wondered, what was the purpose or benefit of using spatter paint in the trunk as opposed to a standard paint such as black? Durability?

I always assumed because it was of a textured nature that it was more wear resistant.

My guess is that it was more decorative than black and the texture and color mix hid imperfections, seams, plugs, etc., well.

It won't look like hell from normal use like a solid color as nd is far more scratch resistant.

Agree with Joe, best guess would be an early anti-skid coating, but 40 years ago who knows what the engineers were thinking.
