Discussion Starter #1
I installed a new starter without first realizing the solenoid only had a single small terminal (S) that is connected to the ignition switch start position. It did not have the (R) terminal which is used to supply 12V to the coil (used in a points distributor) during starting.
I solved the problem by connecting the wire from the ignition coil to the terminal that supplies 12V to the starter motor. This alone does not work and requires a diode be installed in series to prevent the voltage at the coil, in the normal run position, from sourcing the current to the starter motor.
See below:

4 terminal solenoid

1) Large post to battery cable
2) (S) 12V from ignition switch in start position
3) (R) supplies 12V to ignition coil in start position
4) Large post to starter motor

3 terminal solenoid

1) Large post to battery cable
2) (S) 12V from ignition switch in start position
4) Large post to starter motor

Connect wire from ignition coil to terminal #4 as shown below. Add diode in series.

Terminal #4 O---->|--------- to ignition coil

This is a poor picture of a diode. I hope it gets my point across.
