I am trying to finish a rebuild on a 454 for my 69 chevelle. The motor is in the car just fine and I am just trying to finish up the assemble on the other "stuff." The front end is completely off of the car so I can still get at everything easily. When I put on the water pump and looked at the pulleys, it seemed as if the crank pully was out about an 1/8- 1/4 of an inch, so i decided to see if the balancer was not seated all the way. So on goes the installation tool, then a couple of turns later the tool snapped off in the crank. I don't know if I get the dumb ass of the year award for this, but now I'm sitting in the same position (pully out a little too far) and a snapped off bolt in the end of the crank. Does anyone have a reasonable suggestion.

If there is drill access, get some left hand drill bits, and ez outs and remove. Once you get a solid purchase on it, it may not be very tight. Been there done that, with the bolt a half inch deep in the hole...

Not sure what you have tried to get it out, but I wouldn't be surprised if it just comes right out. What tool did you have? With mine once the damper is seated , you are not going to turn it anymore. I mean you can feel very clearly when it stops/seats.

If you haven't tried anything yet, I would start with a maganet and see if you can unscrew it. If not I would try to mark it with a chisel and see if a flat blade screwdriver will get it out, after that I would resort to drilling and an e-z out.

Good luck be patient, right now no real damage is done, but you can change that if you get in a hurry or upset.

I broke the adapter for my Comp Cams damper installation tool.

$15 or more from Comp Cams.

Non-hardened, cheap-sh!t steel. Junk. They should warranty replacement adapters if they're going to be so poorly made.

The only good news was that it pretty much just screwed right out.

If you have access to a welder, you can weld a nut to the broken off piece.

A couple of thougts...

Not sure what damper you're using. If it's an aftermarket piece it may need to be honed before it can be pressed all the way on the crank snout. This has been the case with every ATI super damper I've used, and in fact it states as much in the instructions. Second, I have always used anti-sieze on the crank snout/damper during installation. Not sure if this is a good practice, but I've never had a problem result from doing so.

Good luck! I'm sure you will get it figured out

Jim,
If it is a new water pump, I would not be a bit surprised if the flange for the pulley is not in the correct place. I have seen several of them :(
