I've got 2 or 3 shallow impressions on my after market cowl hood. They are near the edge of the driver side as if someone sat on the hood and pressed in. The metal is not as thick gauge with these aftermarket parts apparently. I had someone look at it that does paint-less dent repair. They said they can't do it because it's in an area where there is another layer of metal on the back side. Seems to me you could push from underneath on the layer under the hood which in turn pushes up on the surface layer? I almost think I could do it myself but I don't want to create a bigger issue. I was thinking of getting a second opinion. Any suggestions?

Like the flaw in the Death Star, better get estimates, lots of them. To my knowledge, paintless dent guys learn in prison that you drill small holes to acess panels that you cannot get to. Get another guy to give a once over.

:cool: I had two shallow dents on my after market hood (some obese guy rested his elbows and his fat on the hood while looking through the windshield at a piece of propaganda I had on my dash). As I understand it, my body shop guy used a heat gun to pop the metal out...

If he's referring to part of the inner structure that is secured to the skin with NVH, or the inner is very close to the skin, then no he can't manipulate it. They need to work the actual metal, not two layered pieces.

Someone dented a hood on a car right before delivery and my PDR guy got it out successfully. He did not attend prison university.

I know that you are looking for a cheap fix but sometimes that's just not realistic. From what you describe, take it to an experienced metal man who knows how to use his torch to shrink metal in order to remove the depressions.

The cheap way is rarely the best way.

If dents are small and shallow I'd mud them before I let someone put a torch on it. I know a good metal guy can do it, but a not do good one could make a mess out of it. Jmo

Ok, let's clear this up. Is the hood painted or not? If no, fix the dents then paint. If yes and the dents are under the hood structure and he can't get behind then PDR isn't an option. Some of the PDR guys can glue a pull rod onto the painted surface and fix it that way, doesn't work as well and can't be used in many cases.

Putting a torch on it isn't an option unless you want to repair and paint it and the one using the torch better be skilled with shrinking metal.
