I'm assembling a 350 for my son's Chevelle and have run across something I think may be incorrect. I want to make sure this is right before proceeding.

When setting the pickup tube height off of the bottom of the oil pan, the pickup assembly is angled up from the bottom of the pan. I expected the screen to sit somewhat level with the bottom of the pan.

I'm installing a HV oil pump with a pressed in pick up assembly (don't recall the brand off hand as it was purchased long ago and the box has been thrown away). I *may* still have the box the pickup assembly came in (will check when I get home).

Are the standard and HV pump different dimensions (using different pickup tubes)? I'm thinking that the HV pump is sitting deeper in the pan. This would require a change in the angle of the pickup tube, right? Do I have a HV pump and a standard pickup tube?

Thanks in advance for any info on this!

Hi Tom, about .300" (nominal) difference in the conventional SB pump and the HV one. If you need the "exact" number I'll get back to you but you cannot use the conventional pickup with the HV pump and the "short" pans!

This is due to the fact the HV pump has longer gears inside and the pickup mounting hole has been moved "lower" (unlike the BB's using the HV setup).

(Add) I would also recommend welding the pickup in place, 360* around. Leave the spring out while welding on the body! Install it when "cool".

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Unless you are "bent" on using the HV pump I would just recommend using the M-55 with the "M98015" (pink/purple) spring from Melling. We do these all the time, by changing that spring you end up with the Melling M-55A. This will accept your screen and have the same (similar) pressure as the HV piece! The HV pumps come equipped with this spring inside.

Gary,
Thank you very much for the info. I believe I have the incorrect pickup for this pump. This pump sat on a shelf in my shop for far too long to consider returning it. So, I think I'll just go pick up standard pump and pickup from Auto Zoo and swap the spring from the HV pump.

Perfect. You don't want the HV pump anyway, un-needed, unwanted, doesn't help anything, doesn't fix anything, not an upgrade, not "better" in any way.

Just wanted to follow up on this thread.
Purchased a new Melling standard pump and pick up from Auto Zoo, swaped the spring from the HV pump, and reinstalled. The pickup now sits at a slightly "down" angle in the pan - exactly what I would expect.
I did find the box from the pick up I originally installed. It had a different part number than the replacment just purchased. So, I believe my original assumption was correct. I was sold the wrong pickup when I purchased the HV pump.

Thanks again!
