I've been looking at 2007 and newer Silverados (late 2007) and was wondering how they've been holding up now that they've been out there a few years. Buying new is out of the question, so I'm looking at used trucks and in the price range I want to stay in, they're going to have some miles on them, generally right at or just over 100,000 miles.

I was wondering if there were any major issues with these trucks. How do the automatic OD transmissions hold up? I know we've come a long way since the 700R4, but it's still a question that needs to be addressed.

Most of the trucks I've looked at are late 07, 08, and 09 models with both extended cabs and the four door cabs. I'm leaning toward the 4.8 V-8. It seems to have plenty of power. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Not sure about the 07 and newer but my 02 1500 Silverado 5.3 Vortec that I purchased new has 370,000 miles on the original engine, trans and rear and I still drive it everyday. Other than one water pump, alternator, fuel pump and starter I have done nothing but regular maintenance. I have even pulled a heavy 20' trailer full of tools for many of those miles.

Randy,

I have an '08 with the 4.8 engine. It's a std cab, 2 wh. drive and no frills....probably call it a work truck and that's what I use it for. I don't go far to work so mileage is just over 50K right now. For the most part, I like it. Runs well, pretty good on gas, peppy enough for me (I don't tow anything big or heavy and i don't tow often). My only complaint is the seats. They're just OK but that's probably due to what the truck is.......no frills! I haven't had anything major yet on the mechanical side; just routine maintenance stuff. I'd buy another one................

The only issue I've had so far is the code being set for the TPS. There is a recall for this so make sure the truck you're looking at has been updated. The code causes the truck to go into NO power mode, which IMHO is downright dangerous. My truck originally would shut down only at stoplights, but eventually started doing it when I was going 60MPH down the highway. No fun bringing a diagnostic computer with you wherever you go to erase the code just to get across an intersection. 09 crew cab 4x4. All powertrains are affected as I understand it.

They have come a long ways. Heard in 04 they fixed the trans issues
Had 4 in my 02 so far. 150k and stil runs strong starting to sound a little tired though on cold starts. Overall very reliable, comfortable etc.
BEst money ever spent was on a high quality scanner to avoid having to take it somewhere.

Youtube is great for finding fixes like the mysterious disappearing coolant (seeping WP gasket). That one saved me a bundle took less than 2 yrs to fix.

Randy, the engines in these trucks are nearly bulletproof. I traded an 03 Silverado with 210K on the clock for a new 2011 Sierra, it now has 37k on it. The old truck had problems with gauges and electronics but ran like new. The Sierra has been trouble-free, 18.5mpg around town and 20-21 highway. Both trucks extended cab with 5.3 liter, strong runners.

My 2011 Silverado story would mimic Stokerboats and pnugenes.
25k miles, 6spd OD, 5.3 with AFM-shuts off 4 cyls occasionally.
Love it. Avg of 18.3mpg across the last 4600 miles--half in town, half highway miles.
Wish that engine was in my SW.

They usually run great.
One item documented widely is brake, P/S, fuel line corrosion as well as rusting under the hood.
Look for it as some seem to be more prone than others.

Oh yeah, I traded off my 06 Silverado with 4.8 because it was underpowered on hills and got less mpg than the 2011 with 5.3.
Did lots of annoying downshifting on hills. Avg'd 17.7 for the last 6000 miles I owned it.
You can do lots of reading on the silveradosierra website. Sounds like many of the '07 with ActiveFuelManagement consume a lot of oil.

I bought an 04 last year. Extend Cab with the short bed 4.8 has 150K avgs 17-18 and it towes my 24ft TT 6000lbs trailer with no problems even gets 11.5 mpg towing the trailer. only issue it has is the passenger side window/lock switch is intermitten. I love this truck!!! My 94 S10 extended cab 4.3 used to avg 18-19mpg so mileage is about the same but a whole lot more truck!!

Thanks guys! Sounds like I might need to consider the 5.3 since the gas mileage numbers look to be a little better. I do have 29 mile commute (each way) I need to think about. Once we make the move from Keller to Grapevine in the next year or so, that'll be cut in half. But I've always liked this body style ever since it came out in late 07!

I have an 010 Silverado ( 1/2 Ton) with a 6.2. WOW LOTSA POWER !!
In town 12-13 Highway 19-21-- Towing my Haulmark ( around 7000) It gets a steady 11 MPG.
NOTE: If you see a 1/2 Ton X cab Silverado with the 3 1/2" tailpipe that exits just to the right of the Lic. Plate, under the bumper. Chances are its a 1/2 ton with a (413 Hp.) 6.2 and a 14 bolt (3/4) rear. The rear is called a hybrid, It has 6 bolt wheels.
My Silverado will have my LS-5/ M-22 El Camino for lunch. Then the Silverado will be spitting out 1970 date coded parts out the tailpipe. A 427 COPO did beat my 4WD Silverado by a fender at the drags.

Not a truck but I have a 07 Yukon 5.3 4wd just hit 100k. Runs nice, adequate power. About 12-13 around town, 17-18 highway. She does use oil when the active fuel mgmnt is active (4 cylinders cut off). I like it.

I maintain a fleet that has roughly 25 Chevy Express 2500 series vans and maybe 10 Silverado and they all have 4.8s. The oldest are 2006 but most are between 2009 and 2011s. No real issues to speak of but the 4.8s seem to either run really strong, or very weak...None simply run good or average. My personal truck is a "bolt-on" and "tuned" 02 Silverado with a 5.3 and that'd be my engine of choice but the 4.8s actually run pretty good IMHO. All of our trucks are loaded down since its an electrical contractor but MOST run good for what they are.

I've seen mileage averages on them from 11 to 16 which isn't bad for a loaded truck or van.

I have 5 gm pickups ranging from 2005 to 2013. They have been good trucks. I agree with most here , get the 5.3. The 2008 was the only one that had tranny problems. Had to replace it at 60000 miles.

Friends with a Ford 5 liter and ram 5.7 hemi are actually getting better mpg's than the 5.3 and are quicker
