What are some signs that the ball joints are about to go or the shocks are bad? Does it feel like something is binding when you go over dips in the road? I know with shocks it's obvious taking corners or they're too soft and it takes very little to bounce the car (like if it's parked and you press down on it) but not sure about the ball joints.

From my experience on ball joints wearing, you will hear a popping sound around tight corners. Also, the zerk fitting, according to the service manual, will start retracting into the lower ball joint. If you replace the lower BJ's, mine as well replace the uppers. And vise versa. They're fairly inexpensive anyway, assuming you do the work yourself.

On shocks, when you go over bumpers or sharp dips, the front-end will keeping bouncing. Anything more than three times I would consider the shocks being worn out.

Those are my signs, others here might be able to expand more.
