Shift-less

Hello All.....I went from 2:73 prairie gears to 3:73's last summer in my 71SS.....I love the performance, except that when I hit 45 or 50, Im reachin for another gear !!! That part I dont like...I have been thinking of getting rid of the 4 speed and swapping in a 700R4, performance built...I guess now is the time, as Im really tired of shifting anyway, and that way I can have my g-force acceleration, and still drop it in overdrive, and cruise at a reasonable rpm...Has anyone had any experience with this transmission, and if so, how was it...I understand they have come a long way, and are now very dependable when built correctly...any comments either way? Oh, its a 454, pretty far from stock... Thanks...John

Johnny O all I can say is go for it and never look back. Just get a reputable shop to build it and you will be happy. Do a search on here and I'm sure you will find the previous threads on this subject. I know race cars running these things so they can handle some serious power.

I know a guy who got rid of his Muncie for a 700r-4 in a Camaro with a healthy 396 and 3.73 gears. He needed the OD because he was driving 40 miles each way to work. He was very happy with it. Just make sure you get a '88 or newer transmission though (new tougher design). OR, put higher gears in and get a richmond 5 spd. since your car is already set up for a clutch.

Go with the 5 speed - unless you are "gettin on" in years. You will miss the excitement of a manual - or sell the cool 4 speed car and buy an auto.Hate to see you ruin a good car.
