The little red needle on my column shift indicator is off, it winds up almost inbetween letters when you are actually in the gear or park / neutral. 67 Malibu with 2 speed powerglide.

Is there an easy way to get at this and adjust the needle without ripping off the whole dash?

Also, the car tracks straight but the steering wheel is at a 10 degree angle. How do I get the wheel off the splines so I can straighten it? Forgive my ignarance, I am a newbie at these old cars and they are older than I am!

To repair the shift indicator look under the column for a single screw that holds the indicator and adjust it accordingly. I'm not sure but it maybe covered by the column to dash lower cover. You can remove the steering wheel with a puller, but that should only be done if other items are not creating the issue....Alignment, worn components...ect.

Jim has published some very good papers on how to center your steering listed below.

The shift indicator is actually motivated by a string and retaining clip arrangement which clips to the steering column. Look under your dash at the steering column and you'll see the clip. It's possible that you may have to remove some vent stuff (a/c) to get to the column "surround" and see the clip.

Simply move the clip to whatever location, on the edge of the surround, that puts the shift indicator where it needs to be. Make sure that the string that goes between the clip and the indicator is on the outside of the surround.

Replace whatever plastic pieces you had to remove and you are good to go.

This information is incorrect for a column shift 67....It may pertain to others but not a 67 Chevelle.
