I've been looking for sear seats for my '64 for a while so i drive the kids around. Finally found a decent set locally on craigislist... called the owner, committed to buying them... goes on to tell me how he moved to vegas because he contracted mold in the lungs etc.. brought the seats with him.. i didnt think anything of it...

Let my wife know i'm finally going to be able to take both the kids at the same time for a ride... as the conversation went on told her the whole story.. she freaks... won't let the kids ride if i buy those seats.

She's being paranoid right? Unless the car continuously flooded over and over.... it would have to be covered in black mold... right?

Sounds like he may be speaking of valley fever (really the only fungus / mold I know of that can cause issues in the lungs) and if thats the case then you are fine and yes, she is being paranoid. Valley fever resides in very dry climates in the dirt / dust (mostly ag areas) I've had it. Aint fun but you dont get it from cars and or molds in the house and such. Its specifically in certain areas and in the dirt and stirs up with ag work and winds.

That said if you want to show her or you are worried pull the covers off and look. Clean the covers, check the foams, stick em out in the sun for a couple days.

Did this person tell you where they moved from or expand on the mold in the lungs thing?

Also - valley fever is not contagious person to person so wouldnt worry there.

He didn't say much about how he got it.. only that it was black mold in the lungs.. only mentioned it while telling how acquired the seats and how he brought them from Michigan when he came down to Vegas...
I wasn't really worried about till she freaked out... I assumed if I check it and there wasn't any mold growing anywhere, I'd be good to go...

Hate to buy good looking seats to just have them redone... I told her that if it could be passed from person to person... we would have bigger problems than a random seat!

The frames are metal...... Just strip them down to bare metal and replace all the padding and covers. Wear a respirator..... Tell her you're far more likely to die in a fiery crash in your 64 than to contract fatal mold disease. That should make her feel better. Just kiddin!

valley fever(coccidioidiomycosis) is from California central Valley, I am not sure but I think it is not in Michigan ...so maybe he has silicosis? Anyways She is absolutely being paranoid.
Probably moot at this point but new mexico, arizona, nevada, mexico, texas and some others.

Anywhere its dry ag country, not just central valley CA. And that stuff aint no joke - my body temp would be at 98 and then within minutes shoot up to 103 and then 25 minutes later settle back to 98 with pneumonia like pain in my upper right chest. Having that happen for 3 weeks wasnt fun....but I drank and smoked my way through it after being told it wasnt cancer. :D

No matter - leave a respirator in the glove box for the wife and kids and tell them they can only ride with you if they promise to talk like darth vader.
