Does anyone make a 5-Speed with a 3.0+ first gear and a .77 or .82 Fifth gear that is a near on direct swap from a 4-Speed?

Trying to find a trans that will make up for my hwy rear gears off the line but still have a mild OD for decent highway manners...

Richmond with OD. .77 in 5th. Not sure what "near direct on swap" means to you but these transmissions from Richmond do not require major floor excavation. You might have to massage the area where the stick comes thru the floor because the shifter mechanism sits a little higher than a Muncie.

That sounds promising. The floor near the shifter area was already modified for the TH400, now swapping back to a manual. Any dissections in that area is OK. Trans tunnel/hump is not at this point.

hey GenPac,

A relatively affordable 5-speed with 3.0+ first and .77/.82 fifth that fits with little modification is a pretty tall order...I know the 5th gear isn't what you are looking for, nor is it the most bulletproof of the 5-speeds but have you looked at the "DMC bullet transmission" from keisler? if your big block is mild, it sounds like it would fit what you are looking for pretty well. check it out

Dan, if you can get over cutting up the floor, you would be VERY happy with the TKO. Just drove my car today, and man does my TKO shift nice. Spend some time putting the metal back as nice as you can, install carpet, and you'll never know the floor was cut.

IMO, there's really no other trans out there w/as many features as the TKO for the price.

I didn't think the TKO was available with a 3.+ first gear. Thanks for the heads up on the DMC bullet... I was gunning for a 550+ tq. powerplant so I am initially hesitant on it's lower rating. I'll have to do some searching to see their consistency and reliability, street driven with higher than rated motors.

The Richmond would be the closest thing that I am aware of offering your desired gear ratios. Your shifter position would be incorrect though.

The factory shifter position for the `68-`72 Chevelle is just over 16.5" from the face of the trans and is on center. The shifter position on the Richmond is like a `55-`82 Corvette at just over 19 1/2" from the face and offset about 2 3/8" to the left of center.

In a Tremec, the closest thing would be the TKO 500 with ratios of 3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.00 and .68 o/d. After turning the shifter 180 degrees, it will be close enough to the factory position for console use. Only the handle geometry would be off a little.
