I've done a few SB to BB conversions but all were autos. Here's my thoughts on it.

It will be easiest to use SB motor mounts. Remember if you use SB frame stands use SB motor mounts. Follow this advice and it will drop in.

You will need a BB clutch z-bar (bell crank), BB headers or manifolds and a Chevelle style oil pan. If you use headers make sure they are compatible with the clutch linkage. If you use GM manifolds make sure they fit your year Chevelle.

Don't forget a 454 flywheel and an adequate cooling system. Also consider the front coil springs because BBs weigh about a hundred pounds more.

Stock 1966 BB Chevelle's use the short water pump, if you go this route you'll need pully's and brackets that fit. I understand that later long pumps and brackets will fit but I've never tried it.

02 cents and a bump!

my chevelle is a 67 396 car,I bought it with a 350 chevy, the car had the orig frame stands, with short and wide motor mounts, when replacing the 350 with the 427,I used short and wide mounts again, with the 396 frame stands,is there a difference in these from 327 to 396 cars in model year 66?----------

my z bar fit fine with the 350 ,and427,used the same one,and got a new big block flywheel.

there is 2 types motor mounts, energy susp shows not small block and big block, but there is short and wide, and tall and narrow, different mounts for different applications to the chassis,to accomidate for the frame pads and other issues--mid to late 70s use clamshell type mounts---energy susp mounts were my chioce-----short and wide work on the big blocks

use a new 4 core big block radiator off the bat
3 core will work also-but 4 core will work best

get good headers for 4 speed, the cheaper brands just dont fit as well!!

I wonder what the difference is between the Z-bars? "Year One" and "OPG" list different part numbers for SB and BB Z-bars. If the SB one fits, great!

With all the posts on engines that won't fit because mounts are wrong it's less confusing to keep them matched. My advice is still to keep 66 SB mounts with 66 SB stands.

Stock 66-67 BB motor mounts will not fit on 66-67 SB frame stands. I've never tried SB motor mounts on BB stands. Thinking about the differences in the stands and mounts, the SB motor mounts will probably fit both stands.

My understanding is the after market short wide motor mounts are for early cars through 67 and the tall narrow are 68-72. It looks like the after market motor mounts fit both SB and BB.

Normally 454 engines are externally balanced so they use a different flywheel than other SBs & BBs.
