will 4 saw horses (rated @ 500lb each) and 4x4s support a 72 body with the front clip still on. I am about to take mine off so as to put my new frame under after I take a few more parts of the old one. Body will be on the saw horses for about 2-3 weeks if everything goes well.

Well 4 x 500 = 2000 lbs and your body shouldn't weigh that much but it still sounds flimsy to me. What if you set it down unevenly? Will it crush the first saw horse and head to the floor? I don't know for sure. Sounds like your not going to strip the car of glass or the front end so It may weigh near your saw horses capicity. I'd error to the side of safety here and use something beefier than the saw horses IMHO.

No. Sawhorses are not the most stable thing in the world. The greatest risk of collapse is side to side, not front to back. Find a better way with a much greater margin of safety built in.

I've always found that empty 55 gallon steel drums make a nice platform for supporting the 4x4s that hold up the body. They are stable and strong.

Do not support the car in any way by the front clip. Support it only by the rockers. In fact, I'd suggest removing the front clip anyway along with any other extraneous parts which can help lighten the load.

Just did a frame off on a 62 SS Impala . We used concrete blocks (8) and 8' landscape timbers. 4x4 work just as well. We laid one block down and the other upright so the timber could lay in the cradle. Two people on each side could lift the body high enough for the frame to pass. The higher you go the more unstable it will be.

We put my El Camino body on plastic milk crates stacked two high and 4x4's, it never moved but that's all we did was store the body, no work was done on it while sitting on the crates and 4x4's.

I don't believe you can support the body off the frame with the front clip still attached. There is no front structure to the clip without the frame.

I did support the 67 on saw horses, no doors but glass in it. I was quite a bit younger at that time, and maybe wouldn't do it again that way.

If you can find the METAL milk crates, Thats what I used and you can adjust your work height. Today METAL milk crates are like looking for NOS parts. And yes NO front sheet metal attached. Very soon you will be having fun!!!!! Bob:hurray:
