helping a friend with a early impala and it has a 409 that has "sample" cast in the block where the casting number would go.
anybody have any info?
must be some type of early prototype?

I'm aware of the 348's with the 'sample' where the casting date was -that was when they were re-arainging the cooling flow thru the deck.
The early 61 09's were breaking block's in S/S competition and GM ran some blocks to revise them but don't recall the 'sample' where the casting number was.
The 623 block which was last cast on April 27th, 1961 and an assembly date of late May 61 are the ones I'm talking about.
Got a casting date on it?
You might check with Aubrey as he's got way more knowledge about the W engines.
