Please let me know what you think about the strength of this install. The brackets you see are going to be holding the shoulder straps of a 4pt harness for rear seat passengers. Bolts are 3/8, and I will be welding at all contact points for added durability.

Let me know, Is this safe for holding people in ?

It looks like that rear anchor is bolted to the package tray, correct? I wouldn't do that. In the event of a crash that sheet metal and anything attached to it will crumble, tear, etc. My brother totalled his 69 Chevelle when he skidded sideways and crossed into oncoming traffic. He was hit inthe right rear and the rear clip was literally torn from the floor and ended up 50 ft away. These cars are not as strong as some people think they are. I would say if you can tie your anchor into the roll bar it would be much better.

No I wouldn't strap anyone in there. Look at the NHRA harness spec. Gives you an Idea of what you need, hieght for mounting ect.

Why not use the original rear belt mounts?

I dont like it. I mount my belts as short as I can. That poop deck is too weak to support you in an accident. Picture this, in a wreck it would be easy to see 20g of instantanious force, if you weigh 200, that is 4000lbs of force. Would you lift your car from there? If you are gonna mount the belts back there I would tie it into the cage with a couple braces coming down to the floor too.

If it were me, I would mount to the mid bar (back of seat bar) on rear hoop.

Only has lap belt mounts, no factory shoulder belts, so I'll use the lap bolts.

Looks like I'll need to weld some more tubing from downtubes to the anchors.

Thanks for your input everybody. Any other ideas and comments appreciated.

This is for back seat passengers, not the driver. But I agree with the others, tie it into the roll bar somehow!

The rear seats are mainly for my kids. My two boys age 9 and 11 won't be real pleased if one gets to go for a ride and the other has to stay home if I use only 2 front seats and no back seat. So it's a compromise at best. If they want to come for a ride, they can negotiate the monkey bars to get in the back. Just want to make sure they're safe back there.

rear shoulder harness points are susposed to be level with the pull thru points at your shoulders ..... keeps you from compressing your spine as the belt pulls thru the seat ......

I am in the same situation with my boys -- both like to ride in the back seat of my Camaro. I used 3 points instead of 5 points. I figure for what we do 3 points in back are plenty safe enough.

Here's a pic that sort of shows the belts in back. They are 3 point belts with the retractor mounted on the lower outside factory mount. The inboard factory mount has the short belt with the latch. The bar has a 3/8" grade 8 bolt going through it to mount the upper mount.

I would use 7/16 fine thread fasteners for seat belts. FMVSS has a number of sections regarding seats/seat belts. Check out FMVSS 571.210 for seat belt achorages.

In my job I speciallize in occupant safety for fire trucks. If you want any more information I'd be glad to help.

Thank you for your reply.

I am not familiar with FMVSS. Is there a website or other resource I could reference ?

On the underside shot you can see where factory shoulder belts would have been installed. Just outboard of the speaker hole there is a fore-aft indent with two holes. The bolts from the shoulder harness would come down through these holes and thread into a drilled and tapped metal plate. In your setup, you would have to tear the whole parcel shelf out to have problems. Tied into the roll cage would be the best.
