I have been reading about and looking at all the options for disk brake conversions. I was just wondering if anybody was running the s-10/ monte carlo brakes on their car. When i was home last i went to the local pull-a-part and found several donor cars. I have that since they were small 10in rotors they didnt work well in trafic. Just looking for some input from someone with first hand experince.:confused::confused::confused:

JMHO, forget it and get some Chevelle/Abody brakes. The S 10/Monte Carlo brakes are smaller diameter brakes.
x2. Those setups are barely adequate enough to stop a G body let alone a Chevelle. You can also convert your existing drum spindles to disc and get the rest of the bolt on stuff (dust shields, caliper brackets, etc) from Right Stuff Detailing and go to town.

later model (88 and newer) Corvette stuff goes onto your stock spindle pretty easily, as well as the 98-02 Camaro brakes.
you might need new wheels, tho..

i'd keep the stock drums before i swapped in the metric disc brakes..

but LS1 (98-02) Camaro rotors are about $35 a piece, reman loaded calipers and brackets can be found in the $50-$75 range.. a piece of steel with 4 holes drilled in it is free if you have a drill press with 1/2", 9/16", and 5/8" drill bits..
oh, yeah- a master cylinder for a 77 Chevelle with manual brakes is about $35...

IF money is tight, heres what id do.....if you google you can get ceramic shoes and go to a pick a part and get some alum drums off a G body for the rear..

those ceraic shoes will bring a drum set up almost to par with discs..i did a lot of research.....google up high performance drum brakes you'll be surprised what people are doing out there...

The aluminum drums are out there. They also came on 80's B Body Caprices. I have a set I yanked off an 86 Caprice I junked.
slight thread diversion here...

they came on pretty much every rwd car and S series truck with an open differential in the early 80's.. the only stock posi equipped car they were put on was the 87 Buick GNX- so guess what people tag them as when they sell them on ebay? yup- GNX, with the appropriate matching GNX premium asking price..
no one makes them any more, and all the GM old stock got used up about 10 years ago, so you are stuck with whatever yo ucan find in a junkyard.. there was a guy on the turbobuick.com board that was talking about tooling up and making them new a few years ago, but it never came to anything. i think he said he would have had to charge something like $200 a piece and sell a few thousand of them to not lose money on the deal..

if you can find a two wheel drive s10 blazer they cam with 11" slip on rotors and dual piston calipers
...and a wheel bearing/hub assembly that costs an arm and a leg from each of your first three children.. all for a brake rotor that has about a 1/4" bigger radius than the older "metric" brakes.

Derrick,

Do you have a template or anything for the LS1 car swap? I have a front and rear set that I was going to put on dad's 72 Chevelle this year, but haven't been able to find a template for it.

jeez novaderrick i was only throwing it out there as an option. i wouldnt call a 100-150 bucks an arm&leg when i comes to brakes. with an 11" rotor it would equal to stock velle brakes and a dual piston caliper to boot.
$150 for a wheel bearing for one side is an arm and a leg compared to $20 to do inner and outer bearings and a new grease seal with the good old fashioned wheel bearings..
yes, it is an option- just not the best one.

i dont know what i was thinking:clonk: youre right novaderrick for what a set of metric brakes would cost at a yard you could buy all the parts local exc the brackets and have it done right the first time. so please dont pay any mind to my posts in this thread. unless you own a g-body.

like novaderrik said and ill agree if one hub is bad the replacement cost would = a stock brake swap. just go to advanced,autozone,napa or who ever you get parts from, pick rotors,calipers,bearings,seals lock nut and hoses. order caliper brackets&dust shields. machine/grind down the boss on the drum spindle and put the parts listed on. this way should only be $200 & all new parts.
