I was thinking of driving up to Oklahoma next week to take in a little of Route 66. We were looking at the Clinton / Elk City area.

Would that be a good area to visit? Are there better places along the old Route 66 than those?

Recommendations? (We're limited to Oklahoma this year.)

Randy, if you're a twolaneblacktop fan, Boswell OK east on hwy 70 is a must! The town hasn't changed much and if you get out and walk aimlessly around town EVERYONE will know you're a tourist and folks only come to Boswell for 1 thing, to talk about the movie....and everyone wants to tell you a story. Enjoy!!

I rarely go out to western Okla, but I'm quite familiar with the sections between Hydro to Tulsa. West of Hydro, not much is left worth traveling on. Hydro is about 60mi west of OKC. We live in Mustang which is a suburb on the west side of OKC.
Much of it is the old 2-lane 66, plus some if the original 66 has been upgraded, smoothed out and straightened out. There are several interesting sights to see along the way.

Actually, If you want to see some great stuff, just take all of your road trips off the interstate. Last year I drove from Nevada to North Dakota that way. I spent four days and stayed in dive motels and loved every minute of it.

Several years ago it was all about "making good time" for me. I finally said "no more" and started taking alternate rural highways on family trips and would have to agree with Jonkatie's sentiment. There are lots of neat little towns that you never even notice on the interstate. Route 66 is most notorious, but you'll find plenty of small town America to take in on all the other "two lane blacktop" secondary highways as well. The scenery is "post card worthy".

I took I-40 from OKC to New Mexico for vacation last year (makin' good time :)) and on the return trip I drove out the North East corner of New Mexico, zig zagged across the Texas pan handle, into the West side of Oklahoma and dropped down and caught the interstate again in Elk City. A desolate, beautiful, and peaceful drive.

That said, I dont have particular sites to recommend, sorry. ;)

<edit> The gas stations can be few and faaaar between. Not recommended for your average street bruiser getting under 15mpg.
Have fun.:beers:

I drove 66 from start to end a few years ago, the best parts were in OK. Right near the Kan/OK state line there is a small town, starts with "C" I think, we went to the down town area, middle of the street, one stop light. Parked right under the stop light to get out of the car to take pics, not another car in sight. We went to a little drive in to get a burger and an old guy started telling us he saw Bonnie and Clyde come thru chased by cops when he was a kid. Stopped at an old brothel west of OKC, drove on a piece of the original pavement that had trees growing in the middle of the road.
Get a book called EZ66, you can get it on Amazon. It has everything listed.
We were driving a 65 Impala convertible and averaged about 200 miles a day.
If you get to New Mexico be careful, we were warned by the state police not to get out of eye site of the car.

Thanks guys! I'm going to bookmark this thread! Right now we're waiting to see if the inflamation in my wife's lower back calms down. If it doesn't, the trip is scrubbed. She can't sit in a car seat for more than a few minutes, so she definitely would not be able to stand a long road trip.

We'll see how it goes the next couple of days.

Is that the place that has the 72 ounce steak they'll give you for free if you can eat it all? I've heard about that place for years. My dad used to travel through Amarillo when he was covering his sales territory and I remember him talking about it.

It's on my bucket list!

If you like thick cut, grainfed steaks of all types and sizes, cold beer, with an old true western theme,it's the place to stop.
