Just installed a set of roller tip rocker arms from Comp Cam (PN# 1411-16). Got them installed with new springs, retainers, locks, etc. I did use the stock push rods as they looked great for reuse.

The problem (not sure if this is a problem) is that I am getting some noise from the drive train after the roller tips were installed. Since the roller tip rockers were installed, I've adjusted the valves, so that has been eliminated as a potential issue. Is this noise normal from the roller tip rockers?

Thanks in advance for chiming in guys!

I have never owned a set of just the roller tip rockers. I have had several engines with the full roller rockers on them and can say that those make a little bit of noise. I might suggest rechecking your lash adjustment. Are you using poly locks or just the stock nut? Poly locks will help you if you find your lash adjustment keeps loosening up on you.

I have the same Comp Cams roller tip rockers on the 454 in my 70. THey make a little noise, but not much. Valve lash has never changed on it using the stock nut, It's been that way for the last 20,000 miles I've put on it.

SAME HERE,i have a set on my 396 with mild hyd flat tappet perfcam and bearly any noise when motor is hot.

I also hade a set of them on a monte ss with 305ho and same reult there too with mild perf cam.

What exactly do yu mean when you say drivetrain noise? Drivetrain noise is usually trans/rear end related and engine noise in just that ,engine noise,do you really mean engine noise like valvetrain noise?

Also, are you running headers because they will xfer more clicky/ticky type valvetrain noise then stock ex manifolds so keep that in mind.

Did you verify proper pushrod length with the new rockers?

I'm running the same ones on my 408 with a solid cam. They make a little noise until the motor is warm. GET LOCKING NUTS!! My stock rocker arm nuts came loose at the end of a quarter mile pass and the results were not pretty...........................

Or new stock type self locking nuts which is what i used for the comp roller tips on my 396 & 305 ho,never came loose in approx 15 yrs use on the 396 and for the 6 yrs i had the monte ss and i did push those motors from time to time, thats for sure.

But older worn stock type rocker nuts can and will back off esp under higher rpm use with higher spring rates and more vibration too as Mark already stated happended to him.

Mind if I go back to the "new springs, retainers, locks, etc" part of this post.
Your questioning the rockers ,but were the springs checked for coil bind ?
Installed height ?
Retainer to guide clearance ?
Pushrods hitting hole?

IMO those rockers are just more noisy than anything else...I have had them on several small and big blocks and with hydraulic and solid cams...Same thing every time...Just plain noisy...No problems, just loud (louder than other rockers that is)...Don't sweat it

I do what Scott does... New rocker nuts... I hate poly locks... I've seen more guys rockers come off with poly locks than stock rockers.. Maybe we just don't know how to tighten em...

Wow that is the first time I have heard of this happening WITH poly locks. I'm wondering if this is just user error, or a bad set of poly locks or worn threads on the studs? Weird.

FWIW, I also installed Comp Cam Roller tips after a failed Erson roller rocker gave me grief. I ordered new standard nuts, not the polys, but still had a stubborn lifter on one cylinder. Don't know why but after a few adjustments the tap went away and all is well. So maybe you just need to re-adjust, run it, and re-adjust again. Just a thought.

I have those rockers with a Hydralic Roller. Any noise is very monor! I would start by reviewing the valve setting procedure. Adjust the exhaust while the intake is closing, adjust the intake while the exhaust is opening. I ran Poly locks for several years on a dragster that ran 197 with a 4:11 gear, you do not just turn the nut to where you want it and tighten the set screw! You turn the nut to where you want it, note the location of the wrench, back up abt 10 degrees, tighten the set screw, then tighten both together ("cheating it") that 10 degrees checking the clearence along the way. Result is that set screw is way past tight. Done this way they do not come loose!

If you have headers it is probably the valves making the noise, i adjusted my rockers several times thinking that was it only to discover that my cam grind was such that the valves close quickly. Of course i am assuming that you are using a roller lifter.

For anybody using polylocks and having trouble keeping them in adjustment, please check that the top of your screw in stud in perfectly flat so that the adjustment screw has the proper surface to adhere to. Factory studs are cupped on the ends, but can be spotfaced flat if needed for this application.

Yes, Also valve covers also will make them seem noisier,i have a cast set which are larger for rocker clearance. As soon as i put them back on they get twice as noisy.
