I wiped a lobe on my cam on start up of my brand new engine. Now i need some help picking either a solid or hyd roller cam that will work with what i already have. Someone said they might make a retro fit kit?

454 .30 I think it's a 77-82 block
781 heads
750 double pumper holley
Stealth dual plane intake
comp cams cam: xe284-h
extra long rockers 1.7
2.19, 1.88 valves
Keith Black Forged pistons p/n#;9919030-8; 4.280 in bore
everything was balanced
Headers with 3" exhaust
4;10 gears

The 4;10 gears came with the car and would not probably be my first choice but since they're already in I thought I'd try them out. This car will see street use 95% of the time with only an occasional trip to the track. I don't mind having to set the lash on a solid once a year but would like easy maintainance. I don't really want to tinker.

Anything else you need to know?

Thanks

95% street use means its a 100% street car IMO. But, if your gonna rev it hard often, go SR. Just a casual drive, with the occassion blast, HR.

I really like this XR286R SR from Comp. What a cam. JUST enough vac for power brakes, 1000rpm idle. Should get you some good HP outta that 454. The XR274 and 280 would probably be a bit better though for a 454. Being that you were running the XE284, looks like your not afraid of running some cam.

Thanks for the response. I did forget to mention that the car does have power disk in the front. I also forgot to mention that I was really going for the rough and choppy idle.

If I were you, I would shoot a PM to Cstraub here with your combo and your intentions. He has designed some very reliable cams and can set you up with exactly what you want.

He will also give you the pluses and minuses of buying an off the shelf cam.

We have pretty much the same foundation. I'm loving the Voodoo 60213 hyd. roller. You can hear it in my sig. Pulls extremely strong to 6000.

the first question that needs to be answered is WHY did you have a cam fail, and what can you do to prevent a recurrance, and WHAT are the spring load rates and valve train clearances, and current compression ratio, if you can,t answer those questions sticking a new cam in won,t do a lot of good

Hydraulic roller will be a good street cam and you will make a ton of torque with that 454 at low rpm. I didn't want the additional maintenance of a solid roller either. Or the worry about a solid FT, though it sounds like if broken in properly, they work just fine. Still, didn't want to worry about it.

Right now my biggest problem with the cam Chris made me is I have too much torque, lol. I asked my friend to count how many times my wheel spun off the line and he said he lost track at about 15. And that's launching 1K rpms below where I should be. Bye-bye dot tires.

My power brakes work and mine's 292/310 adv duration (242/254 @.050), 108 lsa, in a 427 bbc. The block I have is the same years as yours. Motor made 543 tq @ 4K on the dyno.

to address the failure issue. you'll have to search my name and find the thread where all that is addressed. I have since figured out what happened and should be able to keep another failure from happening

Chris, when Chirs Straub offers to help you out i would go for it if i were you.

Chirs is very experienced and will get you the right cam for your apllication that you will be happy with getting no surprises when all is said and done other then good perf from the new cam.

Chirs has helped many team chevelle members with motor setups /cams etc and they always report back here with very good things to say about Chris & the positive experience they had working with him .

Chirs has a lot of experience to offer in getting /designing the right cam for a specific build not to mentione the help with all the other aspects of the engine build too.

Scott, thanks for the bump on Chris, but i think his reputation speaks for himself. I do plan on calling him, but thought he might appreciate it if I waited until it was within normal business hours.

In the mean time, I thought that since other team chevelle members have offered some advice on the cams I just listed, it might be nice to see what other members have to say about the possibility of them working in my situation.

Soooooo.........what do you think?

I would think both cams would work well, the comp looks a tic hotter in spec but has 6100rpm top end (likely more realistic) vs isky's 7k rpm top end (somewhat unrealisitc) on slightly less cam .

Maybe iskys 7k top end rpm is better suited for a significantly smaller 396 vs 454-468 bbc and or they are running consierably higher spring rates then the comp roller setup does.

But i am not a Roller Cam expert but guys like Chris & UDHarold are so i would go with what they Rec over me,that's for sure.

Let us know what cam you decide to go with this time arround.

I like the moderness of the comp, but I like the lift of the Isky. Both should run the same more or less. The Isky is alot more b/c is on a billet/steel core, the comp is an iron core.

Have a look at the 60213 Voodoo, which has out-powered the Comp XE's cams. 241/249 .625 lift. About 280.00 last time I checked. Made 580HP on a 454 with alum heads. Will probably make around 525HP in a iron 454.

PS - keep in mind all these cams your looking at, including the one I suggested, will be pretty "hot" or lopey in a 454. Make sure this is what you want. A nice driving yet good powered roller cam in a 454 should be something in the 230-236 intake duration. Any more than this and you start shaking the car a bit.

I have one of UDHarolds UltraDyne hyd rollers in my 468 with 781 heads (2.19/1.88).

It`s a baby cam by most standards. Fairly short duration but has a good amount of lift going for it.
It has a nice moderately choppy idle (you KNOW it`s cammed when you hear it)

Pulls strong enough to get me firmly in the 11`s (see sig)
I shift around 5600 rpm + - then 6000 rpm. Traps around 6100 rpm.

The specs are : 233 @ .050 .625 lift 109 sep single pattern

Can`t see why power brakes would be a problem.

Just thought I`d pop in to help.

I have no set hours, hell this is the performance game. Good talking to you Chris and let me know when you are ready.
