Team,
Looking for clarity on my build. Cam is installed and went through the pushrod/ geometry set up yesterday. Got everything looking good with the sweep pattern over the valve and got the rocker arm at 90 degrees to the valve at mid lift. The heads are Brodix RaceRite ovals that came with 2'' studs installed (2'' effective stud length not overall) and appear to be too short on the exhaust side. The push rods are obviously shorter on the intake side so no problem there, but the exhaust side does not appear to have enough thread engagement for the poly lock. Is it unheard of or out of the world of reality to need a rocker stud for a big block Chevy that needs more than a 2'' effective stud length? I am looking at ARP studs 135-7202 which will give me an additional .350" for an effective 2.350" stud length. Am I missing something or is this normal? Everything that I have read dictates that correct geometry dictates everything else, push rod length, rocker stud length, etc. The cam and rockers are both roller Straub pieces, and the entire short block is brand new from Shafiroff Racing, .041 MLS head gaskets. Nothing exotic or crazy. Just looking for some reassurance that I'm not missing something.

I have two sets of Brodix. they both have longer valves than stock. BB2+ and BB3 Xtra 327. They need the same rocker studs you indicated. Kind of a piss off that they don't provide the correct studs when you buy them.

Matt,
Before you order studs pull one of the factory Brodix ones out and see how long the bottom thread is. The number you show seems to be awful short but it might just be the ARP picture. Also I am used to the stock GM Aluminum heads which needed a very long bottom thread on the exhaust studs because of how the casting was made.

Thank you all so far who have responded. I also reached out to Chris Straub to get his take on the situation, and he said it is more common than not to have to increase the rocker stud length to allow for proper geometry and to get enough thread engagement for the poly locks. Anyone have any issues or concerns with stud flex with the extra length? The ARP studs that I ordered are made from 8740 Chromoly steel with 180,000 lbs. of tensile strength. Thoughts?

I try to set them up that the set screw is flush with the top of the polylock nut. I hate seeing them either with the set screw sunk in the nut to the bottom or sticking out the top by a bunch.

I have a spare set of ARP studs for sale cheap from my build that has Race Rites but don't remember which set #, if interested PM me, meantime I'll find the # and from what I found it's Not uncommon to need longer studs on RR heads, I used washers under the Brodix studs then did Foxwells video deal for measuring PR's then measured for studs
Thank you for the offer. I would have taken you up on it already, but I pulled the trigger and ordered a set from Amazon yesterday. I also did the same, measured for the push rods, and then calculated the correct stud length. I guess they make longer rocker studs for a reason.

IMHO Brodix could leave their studs as an "Option" since the only guys I've really read about using them are the ones that Do Not have .100 longer valve stems, JMO This is just a side note but what does everyone do with their left over Brodix studs? LOL

I used mine on oem ovalport heads. Its just not Brodix all head manufacturer use short studs. Remember Mike Lewis told me he had a pretty decent collection of studs.

Aren't the threads different and can't use the pinch nuts that stamped steel rockers use? I hope I'm not getting off topic

I used them with roller rockers/polylocks. Same threads but think the studs on most aftermarket studs Doesnt like the oem nuts, the threads will gall easy.
