OK I am officially going full old fart, giving up sport/sporty bikes and looking for my first true bagger.

Any opinions you wish to share on the pros/cons of each bike?

Thanks in advance.

Having traded in my superglide in 2011 for the same reason, I can tell you what i did. I went full bore and bought a Ultra Glide Limited. It comes with almost everything you can imagine as standard equipment. AM/FM, CD,CB,MP3, cruise,ABS, heated grips, etc, etc. I love this thing, it has the sixspeed trans and the 103 CI engine has the oomph to get it down the road. I drove mine until last fall then had back problems that are due to age, so I converted it to a trike using the Champion independant rear suspension. Haven't had a chance to ride it much so far but looking to really get going in June. I also had a stage 2 cam kit installed along with a Vance and Hines exhaust header with screaming eagle mufflers. It does get with the program when you flog it. Hope this helps, and you'll get a lot of other recommendations all of which will be the best bike for that particular person. I like mine!

I don't like riding the Street Glide with that chopped down wind screen. The wind blows my beard up and in front of my eyes. Try both models and you will see the difference. Have you ridden a Road King? I like that model.

I don't have any personal experience w/ either, but know a few that have rode both. I've been told the handling on those two are very different, if you can, get on both for a ride. I personally like the old school look of the bat-wing fairing so I'd have to vote for the Street Glide. I have to agree w/ Tony, give the RK a look, I'm still riding my 01', it's got 60,000 on it and I hope to get another 40,000 or so before one of us has to be retired:D

I'm in the same boat. My FXR is being downgraded to short trip duty only now due to my back issues also.
I was almost ready to pull the trigger on one of the two last year but held off for a little longer, though this will probably be the year I do it.

I did go ride them both though, back to back.
For me it's the Street Glide, though I think if I did longer miles I'd go with the RG instead. The Road King isn't even in the same league as these 2 bikes are.

I liked that the SG was still a little "sportier" (to me at least) than the RG, and frlt a little more "connected to the road" to me. This is both a good and a bad thing, as I preferred the handling and predictable feel of it more. But on the other hand I could see where the opposite (on the RG) would keep you from fatiguing on longer trips too.

They are both killer bikes IMO and you can't go wrong with either one. But if you like power (like me) then get the 110".

I rode a stock 103 and wasn't happy with the power level really. But then I rode a 96" with a stage-II and it was a ripper (outran the stock 103") and I really liked it.

So ride them before committing and decide if you will be wanting to add the SE parts at the dealer.

I had an FLHTC as a rental back in 2007, and loved it. At the time I had an 05 FXD, and traded that bike in 2009 for a new FXDC. I was tempted to go bagger at that time, but the wife [fiancee at the time] frowned on the idea.

The Street Glide is basically the same bike, lowered, with a lower seat, lower windshield, and no take down lamps on the front. My one gripe with that bike is the lack of the lamps on the fairing....makes the bike look like an elephant with those big "ears" sticking out with no lights in front of them. If I bought one, Id have to add those...or Id just by an FLHTC and be done with it!

I have such mixed feelings about the Road Glide. With some paint schemes and windshield heights, it can be an ugly "hammer head shark" looking bike. Definitely needs a shorter windshield and white or silver stripe to break up that fairing. Ive never ridden one, but when I speak to owners of this bike, they rave about the handling and road feel as the wind pushes a fairing that is mounted to the frame, not the fork.

I couldn't bring myself to going for a "land yacht" when I decided to go for more comfort than my vrod offered. I liked the handling and looks of the FLD switchback over a road glide, been very happy so far(miss the vrod speed though)!

I own a 08 Streetglide & really like it alot. Its is my showroom pics. I have owned several bikes & this by far is my favorite. I have heard that the Roadglide is the best riding bike that Harley makes but, I could just never get past the way the fairing looks. Goodluck with whatever you decide & post back with what you purchase.

What bike are you coming from. I have not ridden the Road King but I've been on everything else. I agree that the short windscreen on the SG is a cruel joke on people over 5'2". Coming from a sporty bike back round also, I cannot get over the low speed handling of the touring bikes. I know its an open road bike but you are going to get caught in the inevitable traffic jam and they are miserable. So as I step into my flame suit I will ask, have you sat on a Victory Cross Country?

I rode both bikes and to me since I was doing mostly touring I went with the Road Glide Ultra, I did ride a police edition Electra Glide nice bike but on the highway the RG wins hands down ,me and my buddy went to FL last October he has a an Electra classic we switched bikes for a day couldn't wait to get back on the RG.After a month and 6000 miles my buddy traded his in on a new RG when we got back. This is the first bike I haven't torn the engine down to get more power it does everything I need it to do. The 103 is great with the 6 speed get 45-47 fully loaded on the highway.I have 24k on the bike and its not a year old yet.

The fairing does take some getting used to but once you get over that the headlights dont turn with the bars its a blast to ride. And in all reality over 20 mph you dont turn a bike you counter steer so the lights are pretty much heading straight 99% of the time ... My response to people about the fixed lights is do your headlights move on your car/truck?

Yes its a big yacht but if you doing any touring its the type of bike you want.

here is my RG on the way down to FL . Blue Ridge Parkway

When I got it

Even though I ride a RG I still like my Springer but mostly short trips or around town.It has a 107 twinkie done by Hillside HD.

So it depends on what you need the bike to do . Weekends away I would get the SG for heavy touring like I do RG hands down.

only thing that I will add,
I haven't ridden a RG,but I did have an Ultra Classic.
if you decide to go the SG route, and do any long hauls,i would buy an ULTRA CLASSIC before I would buy a SG.they're the same bike, but you get ALOT more with the Ultra for the money, and it is all removable to get the SG look.Lowers, rear tour box, rear speakers,Passing lamps,etc...

the lowers are real nice in the rain, and they cost $800 + painted to match

the rear tour box is a must when traveling, and it cost probably $1000 + painted to match.

so for a little more $ at purchase time you can really have 2 bikes, an ultra classic and a street glide.

I bought a 2003 black Ultra in Feb, 2003. and bought the removable bracket for the tour box and all docking kits at the same time.got it home and took it apart. BAM ! street glide look I 2003 with all the Ultra goodies!

just my take on the street glide.

my take on a new Harley, NEVER AGAIN !:noway: still have my '72 FLH,and a 2001 96" single cam EVO,but am not a twin cam fan !

for the money, I'd buy a new HONDA F6B !!!!!!!

I was in Kokomo Indiana last week and stopped at the Harley dealer there for a break.
The sales guys were telling me that the Road Glide is being eliminated next year from production. They said the EG Classic probably would also leaving the Street Glide or Ultra. Never ridden a Road Glide but everyone has always said that they are the best for long trips.
Street Glide? Stripped down EG Classic for the same price? I'd go the Electra Glide route. I live in the mountains and can hang with the Dyna's, Soft tails, and such just fine but the EG gives the advantage by far for long trips.
Wife and I have ridden to Sturgis, BR Parkway, to Key West, and other places and I love my Electra Glide. I have an '02 FLHTPI and fixed it up for my taste.

From what I have heard and read is that the factory in York is having problems with switching from the RG to the EG on the same line . They are going to expand and build a new line for the RG . Also the motor company said they were doing a complete redesign of the RG for the 2015 model yr...... I personally would love a water cooled RG
