How did you all break new gears in. Directions say 20 miles and let cool,then take it easy for 500 miles.It might take months to put that many miles on them.Wanting to take it down the track again in a few weeks.This is first new setup and everthing went well (kow) best i could tell.Gears ran a good pattern first time,also preheated axle tubes and welded before putting together.Also installed new axles and all new bearings.Going to finish it up tomorrow after work and want to break it in right.Went from 4.56 to 4.10 if ratio matters.

i would tell you to do the 20 mile thing multiple times. the gears/ bearings need this to get them broke in. do that and you should be good to go to the track. keep in mind the 4.10 will not last as long as, lets say a 3.08. they wear the teeth faster. tom

Mike,
The main thing here is not to let them heat up much the first couple of cycles. I think Richmond only says to drive around the block a few times, letting them cool in between. I would think 20 miles is too much for the first drive. I am pretty sure they have the info on thier web site.

Keep in mind that racers dont do any of that, usually run the car through the gears a couple of times with the back up on jack stands, then go make a pass but ..... with a race car you are only making a 1/4 mile pass at a time. Read the stuff on Richmonds page.

Breakin:confused::confused: Or break up:hurray::hurray:

I put a new gear in, jacked up the car, ran it on the jack for a few minutes, then up to the water box for a quick blast down the 1320:beers::beers::beers:

Damn gears never stayed in long enough to fail from wear, missing teeth was more like it:(:(:(

OK went for about a 4 to 5 mile spin around the block.Good news nothing broke and made it back home.Bad News?,slight whine on drive side and coast side, is this normal on initial breakin? Not a lot of noise but noticable.Seem to get be getting less the further we went, overall well pleased with the way it felt. Changed from 4.56 to 4.10.
