Hi Chevelle friends,
I have a 1967 Chevelle SS 396 cu. in. BB. While up on the lift changing oil my neighbor mechanic noticed the engine right side exhaust manifold hitting the frame. We noticed the engine mount hole is elongated. So, we loosened the bolt, moved the engine higher and re-tightened the bolt. Now there is maybe 1/4 " clearance from manifold to frame.
Is this a valid fix? Will engine torque push the engine down again on the frame? We did notice the engine mount bolts are not grade 8 (hardened).
Any advice is appreciated.

Engine will move right back down to where it was sooner than later if nothing is filing the elongated hole. The right thing to do is simply change the frame mount. They're not expensive.

The bad part of this is changing the mount with the lower control arm in place - doable, but darn near impossible.

First is it the Motor Mount hole that is Elongated ? Bracket Bolted to the Engine
OR
is it The Frame Mount hole that is Elongated ?? Bracket Bolted to the Frame
The First 2 Rows are the Frame Mounts
The 3 rd Row of 2 Brackets are Motor Mounts
The 4 Row is how they fit together

Great post. What should his clearance between the exhaust manifold be?

The elongated hole is on the engine mount. Is this for an adjustment to engine height? Or, simply used to easily line up engine mount to frame mount when inserting mount bolt? My service manual states the engine mounts are non adjustable type. Something has changed since the origional engine mounts came out. I believe it was due to a fix with a problem with mounts on the driver side.

New engine mounts have elongated holes from all the pictures I've seen from parts stores (SS396 and Summit).
What is a good engine mount to buy that doesn't have the elongated holes?

Thanks John

John I am a SBC guy. Hopefully Levon or Kirk or another smart guy who know 67's will respond.

Were the exhaust manifolds that different from 67 BB to 68? thinking 68 was the first year for the dreaded smog pumps and may be a little wider?
Not sure also SBC but worth looking at...

According to my Chevrolet by the Numbers book, 3916178 was used on the '67 Chevelle 396 for all hp engines. 3909880 was also used, but it appears dimensionally identical to 3916178.

Based on this book, one could conclude that the source of the clearance issue may likely be somewhere other than the manifold.

The Elongated Holes should not be for Up or Down but for Side to Side movement
