I’m looking to swap out the powerglide in my ‘65 SS for a 700r. I know the mechanics of the swap are pretty straight forward but I’m wondering if anyone has insight on whether I’ll be able to keep the SS floor shift center console after the swap. I’m assuming it will be an issue with the additional speed/overdrive.

Shiftwoks makes a detent plate kit that has the items needed to convert the stock shifter to 3 or 4 gears, and also to adapt a cable (ealrly Powerglide shifters used a soild rod linkage.)

I think most of the resto suppliers probably carry the kit, but prices will vary...

Do you really have your heart set on a 700r?

A decent 200 4r is pretty much a direct swap for the powerglide, using the same driveshaft. And with even a mild rebuild, they are as strong or stronger than a 700... The 700 will require the driveshaft to be shortened.

I personally like the gear ratios of the 200 4r better than the 700r4.

Thank you for the direction, Shiftworks is exactly what I was looking for! As for being set on the 700, no I’m not but have read mixed info on it being a direct swap (no driveline sizing). I had heard about the 200 as well. The less involved approach is what I’m looking for so I’ll be researching the 200 now and trying to source one. Thanks again
