just got 2 grand from an insurance settlment and i intend to spend it on a new tranny for my 72 402 bbk. it has a TH350 now and i have 3 options i was considering. one was getting a four speed manual, the other was the 700R4, and the last was the 200R4. as i understand it, the 700R4 is a little stronger then the 200 and teh 700 requiers a shorter drive shaft, but im not sure which one i should go with. im swinging tward the auto tranny. im not looking to race or anything, i only have a few engine mods and my main reason fro changing is so that i can actuall cruise on the highway at a resonable RPM. any advice would be great.

Big Bird,

Call Scott at Phoenix, he is my trans man. The link is below:

I love my new 700R4 in my El Camino. Cruising at 2000 RPM at 70 MPH is very cool! :D

If you really want an auto trans then I would go with the 200r4. The reasons being, even though the 700 is stronger in stock form, the 200 can be built stronger than the 700. Another reason is you don't have to shorten the drive shaft, as the 200 is the same lenght as the th350. You also use the same crossmember mounting position.

Given your choices, what Mike said.

Once you price it out, might want to look at a Gear Vendor overdrive unit as a potential option also. A little different, I love mine, and bulletproof. Would probably run you $2600 TOTAL if you install, includes getting your driveshaft shortened. But then the 350 would be your weak link still.

bigbird, I don't know what part of Md you are in, but you could call Thorobred Transmissions in Laurel, Md and ask for Steve Powell, he is the owner and a member of the Md Chevelle Club. If I need trans work, he gets the job. PH# 301-317-7886.
