Based off what my new alternator said. It's the old style... the series 1D Delcotron (which uses the external voltage regulator). What my local auto store had and sold me. It has a sticker warning saying when replacing the alternator, replace that too.

As a long story short, the last time this car was driven was around 1990. My dad parked it, saved it for me, and about 20 years later (currently), I got the thumbs up to fix it. Rebuilt engine completely and bought new parts externally (starter, alternator, battery etc...) and I'm getting it all put together now.

Seeing as how this will be its first time firing up (break-in), I wanna have everything as perfect as it can be. What do you think? About $18 from Autozone. Thanks.

Count me as another  for the Wells VR715. I decided to check and see what my alternator output was at the battery terminals just for my own info, and was surprised to see 16 pegged on my Sears voltmeter. I was probably reading more than 16 volts, as my meter had no reading left.

Thanks to this site, I found the VR715 "Duralast" for $16.99 at the local A-Zone. WOrks great! Now I'm at 14.25 rock steady at idle and above, lights on or off. GREAT!

FWIW, it bolts right to the firewall, BUT since most of us have re-painted firewalls, be SURE to check and see if it is grounded right before putting juice to it through the harness.
