I picked up a dash from a Monte Carlo last week, and I plan to recondition it and install it in my 71 Chevelle. Monte dases have the woodgrain insert installed on the face of the instrument panel, and I need to know how to remove it. Are they glued in place, or are they held in place with snap-in clips? I don't want to damage it because I plan to paint it and reinstall it.

Randy, my monte dash is the one without holes for mounting the woodgrain insert, so I'll tell you how it came apart. I can't comment on the ones with the holes.

It had bend tabs that slipped through small slots in the plastic. There's also 4 screws across the top.

As for glue, it had several 1/4" wide strips of adhesive located at random areas which I'm assuming were intended to reduce rattles. The insert was stuck pretty good but came loose with a gentle, steady pull after the tabs were straightened and screws removed.

The tabs are located:

1) one on the left hand side of the left AC vent
2) one on each side of steering column
3) two on right hand side of AC/Heat control area

Hope this helps, Pete
