70-71 made peak horsepower at 4400rpm, the 72 at 3400rpm and the 73-74 at 3200 rpm, so I wouldn't push one to far past those points. Let me know how you like the parts you put in and how it performs. I just bought a 71 400sb for my 64 and not sure how to modify yet.

you ought to be able to redline any stock built motor to 5500-6000,as long as it is solid and built right.....I used to redline a mild 396 at 6000-6500 and it wasnt balanced...
Really kind of depends on the cam, etc. Even with the short rods this engine should go 5500 safely. With stock heads, you're probably wasting gas above that. tom
