Can you recore an original 3 core radiator into a 4 row out of a 70 Chevelle using the same tanks? I ask this as I dropped off my original 3 core at a local shop and want to turn it into a 4 row and the shop said they ordered a new 4 row core and will be able to use the same tanks. He said the core is 2-5/8" Can this be possible? Sounds like a 3 and 4 row use the same tanks but a different core?

I was told that the 4 row tank core is larger and they can not be interchanged with a 3 row due to the width. You probably could do the reverse, make a 4 row into a 3 row but that is not what you are looking to do.

There might be some problem with the fan shroud if the core extends to far back. Also there is generaly a U shaped metal piece welded to the inside of the radiator hanger bracket that only a core of the right width will slip into. Generally they hammer the backside of this channel flat to allow for the increased width or . Then you also have an option of going to 3/8" rows as apposed to the standard 1/2" row, which makes the core 2 1/8" as apposed to 2 5/8" I just did a 3 row and put in a 3 row on a 66 BB car because thats what came in the car, hope it cools; but won't know until this summer.

Definate difference in the 3 vs. 4 core. The pass side is thicker while the drivers side is the same as the three core. Just went thru this with my COPO..was darn sure the car had a 4 core and went to great lenghs to find a 4 core manual trans Harrison rad..only to find out I needed a three core! Then had to find one of those!!!...BTW three core and two core use the same pass side tank.

I would think they would be reversed.... the drivers side seems only for a 3 row and the passenger side accepts 3 or 4 row.

While the 3 core and 4 core Harrison radiators are different, the 3 core can be modified into a 4-core using the same tanks. I assume that's what you're shop was going to do. I know of a couple people that have done this over the years.

It's a modification - not to say the originals aren't different, but that it can be done with the same tanks.

Yes that is what they are going to do. Turn my 3 row Harrison into a 4 row using the same tanks using a 2-5/8" core. I didn't think they could do that but after stopping in at the shop and seeing the 4 row they are going to put in along side my radiator I see how it can be done. Even tho the drivers side tank won't be correct for a 4 core I will sacrifice the "correctness". I'm getting to anal about this car anymore and it's driving me nuts........no more restorations for me.
