I have a '70 Chevelle that I just put a newly rebuilt powerglide into. I am using a quarterstick to shift it. My problem is that I can shift through all gears while the engine is not running, but when the engine is running the transmission will not go into any gear...it stays in park. The shifter will move the arm and I can hear the arm selecting the gears inside the trans but the trans will not go into gear.

Here the is really weird thing...I can put the shifter in Neutral when the car is not running and it will roll like normal. But then I turn on the car, with it still in neutral, and the car will no longer roll...like it is back in park!

I am dumbfounded by what the problem could be. It has plenty of ATF in it and the vaccum line is hooked up.

Anyone have any thoughts???

when you run through the gear positions running you cannot feel the car trying to move at all? are you sure theres enough fluid? sounds like there is no hyd pressure due to improper assy, wrong or incorrectly installed torque converter etc

I don't think its a pressure problem because it rolls when in neatural off, but stops when it starts up have you tried rolling it in any other gears when its off? it won't roll in park because of the pawl. it sounds to me like its not shifting gears internally

It does have enough fluid, yes. When the car is running it will not roll in any gear, but it will roll in all gears but park when the car is off. And no, the trans does not feel like it is going into any gear while running.

I thought is was a fluid pressure problem also but fluid is flowing through the cooler lines at pressure. I just can't understand how I can start the car with the trans in neutral but when the car starts it's like the trans goes into Park without the shifter moving.
