I have a '70 El Camino. I recently turned on the switch and the headlights just flashed like when a light bulb burns out. I have pulled out the switch. I opened up the switch and it looks so simple. How could it go bad? It is just has a few contacts.

So here is the question. How do I fix it?

I bought a new one for $9.99 at autozone.
I bought top of the line halogens about 10 years ago. The switch lasted for six years of everyday driving. The car was parked for the last four years.
Kragen wanted $30.99 for the switch. For that price I would try to fix it.

Ask for one for one for an 82 pick up. Checker Auto here (same as Kragen) sells them for $12 and has them in stock
