Re-Painted 12 Bolt Rear End Today (Pictures)

I have all new rear suspension parts and a 12 bolt 3.55 posi rear end with all new parts that I bought last year (to have on hand), and I was going to install everything this past weekend.
The rear end housing had already been sandblasted and painted when I bought it, but there were some drips/runs in the paint which were bugging me, so instead of installing it I decided to sand the runs out of it, scruff the rest of it up with sandpaper and repaint it...I'll install it next weekend.
My wife says I'm really too picky about things on the car that most people will never see. She's probably right, but I just feel better about it when I do those picky things.

Plus, I can let people see it on the forum before I install it. :D

What do you think?

Here it is just after I received it. The paint job gave it good protection from the elements, but like I said, there were some thick runs that were bugging me.

Here it is after I sanded it and repainted it this past weekend.

That crap bugs me too. If you can`t do it right the 1st time why bother. Looks much better. Nice job!! Tell the wife maybe nobody will see it but YOU know it`s there and that`s all that matters. And I`m not bashing your wife...for the record!!! Ha.
Had mine Sand blasted & Powdercoated for $100.

If knowing it's perfect under there is what turns your crank, more power to ya.

Personally, it bugs me a little, but I've spent HOURS extra working to get things perfect, mostly succeeding, only to have the parts end up covered in dirt and water under a car that gets driven, looking identical to the parts that I didn't spend nearly as much time on and that aren't 100% perfect.

Plus, I doubt very much that they spent much time at all on the production line worrying about perfection. I've seen plenty of half assed crap from production on these cars.

I have the rear assembly up on the saw horses right now. I'm going to paint it with POR15, and then the pumpkin with Cast Blast to give a little bit of contrast. I'm doing it in the backyard with a brush, and it's going to get crap and bugs and maybe a stick or two in it before it dries. But since it will be under the car and I don't plan on putting it on jack stands with mirrors under it, the only one who will know is me.

My cars are drivers. I'm trying to keep that in mind as I put my convertible back together.

But Andy...
I think it's pretty much common knowledge that your cars have so much Bondo in them that they'd probably float, so it's understandable that you're not concerned with twigs and bugs being dried into your undercarriage paint. :D

Good looking rear end, it pays to take time to make it right. Where did you buy your rear end from. I have my 1966 convertible apart and not sure if I should put the 10 bolt back in.

I notice more and more people will bend down, even lay on the ground not being afraid to get dirty at shows, to look at the undercarriage of cars at shows these days. So you did good by not wanting to just leave it alone and make it look better then it was.
i just completed mine as you. i also used clear engine paint on the rear cover; they are raw aluminum and may get some corrosion later. the clear will prevent it and makes it way easier to clean as i found out after installing it and had some grease on it that wiped right off instead of getting buried in the aluminum pores.

Thats a great idea, I should have done the same on the cover. I wire brushed mine with a drill and brush bit. Sanded, primed, then shot with Eastwoods chassis black. My local NAPA store had rattle can clear that had a hardener inside. Had a button on the bottom of can that you activated the hardner with, then had 40 mins to spray everything. Turned out very nice-I thought about shooting the cover then forgot :(

OP-Rear looks great !!
