I've got a set of used small block heads that I'd like to check out before I send them to the machine shop. I don't have a split ball gauge to measure the ID of the guides. Are there any backyard type checks to verify that my valve stem to guide clearances are okay? I do have the outside mikes to check the valve stems. I do have a valve removal tool.

Best Regards,

Mike

as to the valve guides, put in a valve in the head and see if you can wiggle it excessively, if you can, then your valve guides are probally worn. also, if you want to find out valve size, invest in a digital set of calipers and measure them at their widest point. hopes this helps you out a little.
