I have an 3.36 geared open 10 bolt in the coupe right now. I have a fresh 3 series posi-carrier that I plan to drop in. I'm using the same gears from the rear now. the 3.36.My question is do I still need to have the rear dialed in even though Im using the same ring and pinion but a different carrier or is this only done with new ring gear and pinion? thanks guys.

Measure the backlash before you remove the old carrier and ring gear. When you install the ring gear on the new posi case (with new bolts and bearings) you want to shim it to approximately .010" preload (that is, .010" more shim than will allow the carrier to snugly fit into the housing beraring saddles) to get the same backlash reading as before. You should not have to touch the pinion unless you are doing a complete gear change.

Thanks Dave, that leads to another question, I'm not sure how to measure the backlash?
