The Rochester unit was manufactured by Rochester Products Div., General Motors
The Carter unit was manufactured for General Motors by Carter Carburetor. They are nearly identical and interchangable.
Dunno about a fire, but my Q-Jet was manufactured by Carter in 1978. I heard that Rochester went on strike and since GM owned the "moulds" to the carb design, they handed the production over to Carter for a short time. I guess they did this a few times in the 70s. I really don't know if its true; I haven't done much research into it. It would be good info to have, though. Just more useless knowledge that is very interesting, but not necessary.
