Make sure you didn't pick up a vacuum leak. It could also have a frozen power piston. Not an uncommon problem. I have never come across any combo where the acc. pump needed modification using a Q-jet.

be sure the float level is right up there. never lower than 5/16", I try to push it 1/4 if the car has a mild cam. Be sure you've got the accelerator pump plunger assembly. I've seen some lately where there was mix-n-match between the plunger and the rubber cup. Make sure there's a steel ball under the screw between the pump well and the needle and seat. I'm with Mike, accerator pump mods are basically never needed on a correctly built Q.

tom, i purchased a high perf. acc pump from edelbrock, should work, as far as the steel ball next to the needle i have herd that people use a punch and reseat the area for the ball to set, is this true?

you shouldn't need to do this unless the carb sat around full of water for years or something. DOn't overlook the importance of aggressive ignition timing, especially if there's a hot cam involved. 16 - 18 initial is not too much although you will probably have to limit the amount of meachical available to keep from ending up with too much at RPM.
