Hello all, looking for opinions on using black oxide bolts unpainted on intake! 1972 402 SS. Rather than using the stock bolts with paint. Looking to avoid paint chips when retorqing the manifold after heat cycle. Found some block oxide shouldered/built in washer bolts that look very much stock just know M on the top. Your thoughts???

I paint the bolts orange. If you need to re-torque at a later time ???, I stick a piece of cloth or shop/rag over the head and re/torque. I have been known to use a tiny brush and do some touch up work.
The intake is ( around ) 30-35 Lbs??? that is not a lot of torque.

Black oxide bolts will rust after a period time (around 6 months or so). Might coat them but that would defeat the purpose you want them for. Its not the way to go and is why black oxide is a cheap finish. Don't recommend it for the long haul on a nice ride.

I am assuming you are using the stock cast iron intake. Paint them orange when you paint the engine. Retorquing the intake should not be necessary if you use a good quality intake gasket.

I used the correct bolts and then painted the scuffs.
An airbrush works real well. Pinpoint accuracy and controlled paint volume/air pressure. As a Graphic Designer, I have a pretty good one, but an inexpensive hobby brush from your local craft store will get the job done too. You can touch-up those larger spots under the hood as well, i.e., a scratched inner fender, firewall, etc. Just a great tool to have with a ton of uses unrelated to your car.
