Is there a trick to protect bolt/nut threads near gas welding areas?

I am trying to weld in O2 sensor bungs and the welding heat causes scale to form, which is not a good thing in the threaded area. I am about to resort to brazing the little beggars in instead.

stick a spark plug in the threads, weld the bung onto the pipe, and take the plug out. the sparkplug would also seem to make a pretty good place to hold it while you tack it in place.

Yeah, stick a plug in it. I would also chase the threads after your done, in case the heat caused any warping, that'll true 'em up.
