I will be cleaning, prepping and painting the rear end differential housing and rear drum backing plates sometime next week.
Any tips or advise would be appreciated.

I am planning on pressure cleaning it, then hit rest of it with wire brush and cleaning fluid (mineral spirts, gunk, etc). Maybe sandblasting if necessary.

Is there a particular primer to use before painting?

What paint to use? POR-15? and then a top-coat?

Do the brake backing plates get painted with the POR-15 also or should I spray them with a high temperature gloss black enamel? Should I use the same paint on the inside of the backing plates, where the brake shoes press against?

Also, I am assuming that I need to remove the rear cover and cut in the paint around the housing. Let that dry then re-install the cover after that has been painted. Does that sound correct?

Are the brake drums correctly painted metal grey or should I use same gloss black on them?

Thanks for the help!

I pretty much cleaned mine the way you described, except when it was clean I duct taped the axle openings, pinion seal, and vent tube then sand blasted the entire rear clean.

I painted it 3 different colors. Pumpkin housing-cast iron paint, axle tubes-stainless steel paint, backing plates-both sides satin black or cast ..
diff cover-stainless steel paint.
Brake drums-cast iron paint.
Grey shocks, black control arms, new brake lines, a couple inspection marks, a few stickers, like on the shocks/springs and I think it looks good.
Some like it all black, but I prefer the contrasting colors to duplicate the original unpainted look instead of rust like it should probably be.

i would highly recommend sanblasting it. nothing preps it quite as well for a nice smooth finish. sandblasting is cheap as well. it'll probably run you $25 or so. if i was going to take it get blasted i would look around for other pieces to take in with it, cross member, control arms, etc... they charge by the hour usually, you could get those done for next to nothing.

Them Bones.. Them Bones...

Frame hitchin a ride on my pick-up, going to visit the frame machine for a check-up. Afterwards, going to the galvanizer. Also, the rear end before and after sandblasting. That is getting a new posi and a set of 3.73's, bearings, etc. and then paint or powdercoat.

FWIW, I just used a wire wheel on a drill to prep my rear end(along with LOTS of degreaser).. Then I painted the axle tubes semi-gloss black & the differential got a few coats of cast balst..When I get home I can put some pix up, I have gotten lots of comments of people who like the contrasting colors on the rear end..

I bet there will be a lot of guys squatting or laying down looking under cars at CB 06. :D They'll say "Oooh--that's a nice one" and "Wow look at the colors on that one". The wives will ask "What are you doing?" & we'll say, "Honey, we're looking at everybody's rear ends". They'll shake their heads and walk away, disgusted with us again. :p :D
