I've been driving my 70 Malibu for about a month now and just noticed that while the engine is idling, sometimes there's not enough pressure to make the power steering work. It gets jerky and uneven to turn. This is a new thing and I'm wondering what's going on. I wonder will it worsen gradually?

Is it the pump(can it be rebuilt) or the gearbox(ouch!)? Any experiences?

Thanks
Panu

I would first try tighting the belt. It may be slipping just a little.

This happens sometimes when the pump runs low on fluid and sucks air. This happened to me recently when a hose came loose and I leaked/pumped all of the fluid out. Refill and while ideling, turn wheel all the way to left and right and hold for a few seconds. Drive it, and repeat as necessary. This gets the air out of the lines and back to the pump. Cured mine.

Before tightening the belt, check it good for cracks and the like. Sometimes no matter how snug the belt is, if it is going it'll slip on the pulley.
