Ok.. before I go crazy ( oops... too late ) can anyone assist me with figuring out which power steering pump and bracket(s) will work with my project ?
I have a 66 - 396 sitting in a 68 Chevelle. First bracket ordered from Summit, no worky. Called Billiet Specialties, and theirs that looks like will work, does not.
After searching for the last 2 weeks, it seems I am getting delerious. Looks/sounds like there are multiple choices, but I am pretty sure that's not the case.
I have no preference as to which pump to use ( Saginaw, GM Type 2/remote ) just need to get a setup that works. I have a short water pump, with the Billet Specialties alternator bracket that hangs off the head on drivers side. That works/looks great. Just need to get a pump, bracket and hoses.

Can anyone help on this ?

I ended up going to CPP http://www.classicperform.com/chevelle.htm to get their power steering bracket, it was available in chrome and plain steel. It has three different mounting heights so allow you to possibly fit a standard type 1 pump with reservoir under the alternator. I ended up going with a Black Mountain alternator set up for the passenger side to use the short water pump with the blower.

The 66 and 67 power steering pumps were special brackets with remote reservoirs to fit under the alternator and still clear the steering. I think the 68 has a rear steer box giving you more options.

no Chevelle ever had a rear steer setup.. that was Camaros and Novas..

the "proper" bracket for this application depends on what water pump setup you are running- long water pump brackets are different than short water pump brackets.. a 68 had a short pump stock, but it's easy to use a long pump in one of them.

use the stock set up for a 65-68 BBC from a Impala or Chevelle or find a BBC truck from the 70's

i think they made the frame a little wider in 68.
