I have a PS box from an '85 Monte Carlo SS on my '69 Maibu. The seal at the input shaft is leaking. What's involved in replacing the seal?

Von, I had the same box in the '82 Elky, and it leaked in the same place. I swapped in another box and it leaked worse in the same place. I bought a seal kit and tried to reseal both boxes using the factory service manual and failed miserably. I bought a reman Grand National box at O'Reillys for $116.00. No more leaks, no more frustrations.

Does the entire box have to be disassembled to just replace the adjuster plug seal? I don't see anything in the links relating to replacing that seal that doesn't require the box to be complately disassembled.

No, you can remove the plug assembly w/o disturbing the rest of the box.

My locknut was frozen to the adjuster plug, so I didn't even use a spanner wrench. I used a sharpie to mark adjuster plug orientation relative to gear body, which came in handy for re-assembly.

Before I started this project, I made my own spanner wrench. I used a piece of bar stock w/ 3 holes. The hole in the middle was clearance for the input shaft. The other holes were for dowel pins, used to fit into adjuster plug. I used a crescent wrench to tighten it all back up.

When we re did the Lemans Sport it had sat for quite a few years and of course the seal leaked. I put some of that stuff in that is supposed to swell the seals. It worked for the 12K + miles that we put on the car. Although I don't generally have a lot of faith in stuff like this, it's worth a try.

Keith, Good idea. Worth a try. It only started leaking after it sat over the winter in an unheated garage.
