Synchronizers. If you take off in first and let it coast for a second or two before you shift into second and it goes back into neutral, than the 1-2 synchros are gone. This is very common on older Muncies.

Probably what davis95 said, BUT could be the shift linkage too.

The way to check it is to put it into 1'st gear with the shifter, then from underneath the car you pop the linkage-rod loose from the shifter arm of the tranny and see if the shifter arm wants to move further forward into gear on its own than the linkage-rod was pushing it.
If the linkages of the shifter isn't adjusted so that it's pushing the 1'st gear shift arm/leaver all the way forward as far as it needs to go then it'll actually be holding 1'st gear back a little from being able to fully engage.
That will cause the exact symptoms you are experiencing.

But so will the worn out syncros. And if it was working alright before and this just started happening then it's highly unlikely that the shifter is at fault.

I have a Muncie 3-speed, and I have experienced the same problem. When I first installed it, it popped out of 2nd all the time. The whole 2nd gear had to be replaced.

Lately, sometimes it will pop out of 1st if I am careless and don't pull the shifter firmly back into 1st when I take off from a stop. A minor linkage adjustment might help, I haven't had time to check it out.

Generally from what I've seen, worn gears/synchros will have more of a tendancy to pop out of gear underdecel, and less apt to pop out under accel.

Let me clearify a common misconception about falling out of gear.

Shifters CANNOT be adjusted to correct this. If you have a good neutral gate on a factory shifter then the shifter is adjusted. Sometimes Hurst shifters can have the stops turned in too much. Remove the stops and see if the problem goes away.

Popping out of gear is not caused by "BAD SYNCHROS". A synchronizer is bad when you get a GRIND going into gear. If it shifts fine then your synchronizer is not worn.

WORN components such a the gear's clutch teeth, the slider, or the shift fork can cause falling out of gear. Could be one item or a combo of the three. Severe end play of the gear train where the rear bearing fits loose if the rear housing can cause such an issue.

Although the slider is part of the synchronizer assembly, people need to understand why if falls out of gear. So many people purchase rebuild kits with new synchros ( synchro rings) thinking that the fall out problem will go away... it doesn't. That is why is really isn't cool to throw out the worn synchros answer. Take apart your transmission and inspect your parts.

Most Muncies the 2nd gear engagement teeth are worn and so are the sliders teeth. The groove that the fork fits into is opened up and the fork is worn.

I'm doing a video on crap being sold on Ebay to show people how most of these rebuilt Muncies are not worth the money. One of the scenes shows a rebuilt Muncie with new synchros with extremely worn gears and sliders.
