i have the wiring right now and the starter has a good ground. The starter is was new but im not sure of its condition now that ive been trying to get it to work with several different shims. With the medium shim the gears looked like they were spaced right but when i turned the ignition i got a clicking noise and the flywheel started to turn just barely and stopped, but all i got was clicking. i tried the medium shim on one side so it would be at an angle and fit a little better but then the starter made a high pitched whine noise and the flywheel didnt turn at all.

what am i doing wrong? very frustrated. i've been messing with these starter probs for a couple weeks now. do i need a starter with a more powerful motor to turn the flywheel?

which was a better problem? the clicking or the whining noise. i guess the clicking meant not enough power to the motor to turn the engine over right?

might sound to simple to be true, but i faced the same probs u are having, i had an optima red top, the starter would work, then it grind, then it would just spin, tried 3 different starters, still no fix, dad said its your battery, but it was only 3 months old, well i listened to the old timer, got another one and it cranks like a dream, good luck

Is the starter a standard or a mini? First with the key off (so the car will not start), jumper the "S" terminal to the BAT terminal, (on some starters you can use a screwdriver or make a jumper wire, be dam sure to do this safely) the starter should crank easily. If it does, you have a wiring problem, if it does not, you have a starter problem. I would also remove all shims as you may have been trying shims when your problem is something else.

Is the starter a standard or a mini? .

its standard. i think im just making this harder than it really is. first i had wiring problems but fixed them and now i think the battery and battery charger just arent fully charged. noob mistakes but on the bright i have learned alot about the starters.

are the mini starters a good idea if i will be installing headers soon? also do they help at all will heat soak?

Mini starters are much better than standard starters. They are lighter, produce more torque with less current and some give more options (multiple mounting positions, solenoid and or electrical connections on the bottom ect...) To prevent heak soak problems, upgrade battery cables to 2 or 1G, upgrade wire to starter "S" terminal to 10G (from starter to firewall) and use heat sleaves on the wiring. A lot of times its the wiring, not the starter thats getting to hot causing the problem.
