Is there a way to check piston to valve clearance without taking my heads off. I am installing 1.6 ratio rockers that will increase my lift to .508, .512 in a small block.
Thanks

One simple way would be to pull the spark plugs. Remove a valve cover (driver's side). Then bring the motor over by hand until #1 exhaust just starts to open. Remove the intake rocker and replace with the 1.6 rocker. Put .100-.150" worth of feeler gauges, shims, etc between the valve stem and the rocker arm. Tighten the rocker to "0" lash. Turn the motor over BY HAND slowly. If there is any resistance STOP! Usually you will find no problems and you know you have AT LEAST .100-.150" of valve clearance (if those are the shims you used). This is plenty for any motor. You can run less clearance but I like at least .100". Check intake and exhaust the same way.
