As you can see my OPGI bumper is sticking past my new AMD quarters on the sides. I replaced all the sheet metal in the back besides the deck filler so. Not a lot of reference points but it all looked good at first. The drop offs are even with the trunk floor but not with the quarter which I thought would be ok. I struggled with this a lot and ended up putting a filler strip and was going to seam seal it later to cover it up. I think that could have been a mistake as maybe the quarter is a little too stretched towards the ground and is out of shape a bit. Maybe it’s not rounding enough to tuck the bumper edges better? I’m trying to get this stuff to actually fit after a 2 year break and will cut apart welds if I have to. What would you do?
Thanks!
Joe

I'm not a body man but honestly I think your bumpers are fitting way to close to the quarters. Mine have a gap of about 1/2" and they do stick out past the trunk and quarter on top. Another thing did you fit your valance in I've seen a lot of cars where the valance ends did'nt meet the quarters right. These pictures aren't the best but you can get an idea. Go on Ebay and look at some of the cars and you'll see they fit all over the place.

I think you’re right about the fit to the panels being a little too close. I’m going for a well fitting and well gapped car so I’ll have to see what looks right after I put the lower panel on. I still wonder if the quarters are positioned correctly in the back though.

I agree the bumper is too far forward. When I replaced my quarters, it was necessary to test fit the bumper and rear valence BEFORE any welding. You may just have to split the difference on the bumper side to side.

I just looked at about 3 cars on Ebay and the gaps are more like my car. I've had my bumper off and the pictures are how I set it when I put it back on. The Valance is important you may find the quarters are too far in or out and that could be only on one side. The valance also bolts to the bumper in the middle at the license plate bracket. That would also make a differance on the side shot of the quarter where the bumper sticks out past them.

It's been off the car for so long I forgot how that could play into things. I'll have to attach it and see if things change much. I wish there was a suggested gap size for the bumper. I don't want to cut it too close, but I also don't want it to look sloppy. I'll have to do some checking on that. Right now the bumper gap is about 3/16 - 1/4.

I still dont get why the drop off doesn't meet the quarter correctly. I should have posted this problem 2 years ago when i was assembling this stuff but I was just happy things mostly fit I didn't look at the details that much. Now i am! I don't know if there's much correcting this without serious risk of messing up the quarters. I'll put on that rear valance and see where things are at and post pictures again.

That filler panel you added looks hackish, sorry.

Getting a tight fitting car on the rear isn't gonna happening by just loosening bolts and shifting panels.

If you are not willing to plug in a cut off wheel and welder you are stuck with what you got.

First thing I would do, cut out those drop off panels and weld in new ones. They look like crap and frankly you could have a great looking car, and if I saw those I would instantly wonder what else was hacked together.

Pulling out the quarters to meet the bumper isn't gonna happen, plus it would also wind up pulling the gap at the lid pulled out of place. The rear valance will help establish the location of the quarters.

Frankly, you need to cut and modify the bumper.

I’ve learned a lot since I put those strips in there. Not something I’m proud of but felt completely stuck. I’ll have to install the tail panel soon and see how things look.

I've been thinking about the "hackish" look of those pieces and I'm going to cut them out this weekend and try to fit them better. I'm not affraid to take anything apart that I put together, even if it's welded up already. I can always drill out and reweld. If anyone has any suggestions as to what approach I should take it would be a huge help. I don't want to spend all this time and money to take short cuts. I don't want to blame the poor welds on the drives side on someone else, but those aren't mine, but thats not so much the problem, it's the poor fit to those drop offs which I think are changing the shape of the quarter to not at all match the bumper....

My drop offs had to be forced with clamps and screws. They were the only part of my back end that was a problem . I got them to fit bit it took some work .

Also wondering if by forcing the panels to fit if that lifted the quarter up.... I'm hoping that will happen, plus make it look correct. Ah, I should have taken more time.
