Hey guys i am looking to gets some heads and a bigger cam for my daily driver. The setup right now is 350 stock heads, small cam, alluminum intake, long tube headers, and 3.05 gears. I am thinking the car runs around 15.00 right know i would like to get in the 13s with the 3.05s because next year i might have to commute for colege. Is it possible with the 3.05s? How far would a bigger cam and 2.02 heads get me?

Thanks

whats your bidget, and trans? im assing th350, and stock stall.

do you want to swap out stalls?

i would look for a cam in the high 21x0's to low 220 duration, especially with those gears. you possiblm ean 3.08 gears. and a set of vortec heads and a matching intake manifold. and sell your current stuff you will not use

i ran a stock 350 with comp xe268 cam (224/230 duration 477/488 lift) with ported 336x heads, with a stock stall and powerglide. it made 268rwhp and 301rwtq. not sure what it would have run but i went 16.3 @ 83 with only using 2 gears and lifting at 1/8 mile with my 4spd i swapped to later.

xe262 is a decent cam to run also.

some of the fastest bolt on LT1's run a cam with no more than 219* of duration @ .050 but with a lift of about .550. again these motors have heads equal to vortecs and 10.4:1cr.

also need to know the type of car
emission considerations?

Think of your car as a fine-tuned watch. Go yanking on a few things, it may not work well. Performance parts, 3.05(?) gears, economy, 13s....may not be easy. Maybe leave it stock and get the blue bottle.

Motor is stock so i dont know about the pistons. Its a 4 speed car. Budget is 1500-1200. And yes the gears are 3.08 sorry for that.

Ok, that is a very do-able budget.

I guess you've got flat-top pistons then, and 64 cc heads are the way to go. Do you want to fork out the dough for aluminum heads? The later-model vortec heads (#906 or #062) are pretty good, and as stated, you'll need a vortec-specific intake and valve covers. I think the cheapest aluminum heads are about $700/pair, where vortecs may be half of that, with the machine work to run a higher lift cam.

What say you?

Is there any difference besides weight? If not then i would rather not.

Aluminum has a much better heat-dissipating quality. You can run higher compression with aluminum, like 11:1 on pump gas.

If you are going with iron heads, the easiest thing to do is get a set of vortecs. The heads shouldn't cost you more than $500. There are lots of places that sell them, on Ebay, at Summit/Jegs, etc. You'll need self-aligning rockers for them.

A dual pattern cam, like the XE268H or the voodoo 60102 would be the best bet for a cam. It would be a good idea to go for a new timing set while you're at it.

What kind of carb do you have?

scoggin dickey sells a complete top end kit which includes
vortec heads (either stock valve springs, and i believe 3 different stages so you call it of springs and machining)
edelbrock intake (your choice of performer, performer rpm, or srpm air gap, and tbi i believe)
head gaskets
head bolts, intake gaskets
intake bolts
valve cover gaskets
valve covers
rocker arms
and the heads are fully assembled for about 1050.

take your intake and heads and sell them, and depending on the intake, get maybe 100-150 bucks back.

your compression should be about 9.2-9.4:1 with 64cc heads if the motor is completly stock. this will help, and depending on cam you can still run 87 or 89 octane gas.

no benefit really to alum heads, not in a stock dd application.IMO

then add your cam and lifters for about another 150 and your within your budget and making close to 320hp.

Or, just buy my fresh 305 HO heads and I'll throw in a matched Comp 268H cam for free. ;)

And you'll be able to use the intake you've got.

I hear ya buddy. It took me more than a year to get enough $ together to hook up my little sbc. I am using the same heads that BillsCamino has for sale. They were by FAR the most bang for my buck. ;)
