I was thinking of using a barry grant phenolic spacer under my brad urban quadrajet. I have heard that the wood / resin spacer really helps to insulate the carb from the heat of the intake manifold . whatta guy's think ?

All I can add is that it DEFINTELY keeps heat isolated. I have a home made phenolic spacer under my tripower carbs, and the heat diff is amazing.

My carb stopped percolating when I added one.

phenolic spacers work well just don,t get the cheap plastic knock off versions that warp and leak, and be aware that the dual plane intakes tend to work best with the 1"and 2" four hole designs but single planes tend to work best with the larger single open plenum designs, the idea is to add plenum volume and change the abrupt angle changes in the air flow as it enters the runners

I added a 1/2 inch open on my turbo sbc combo. It helped with restarts after a 15 minute or so heat soak. Best anology I can use is when you stop at 7-11 for a super big gulp and then you come out and you have to crank and crank. My spacer cured that problem.

It makes sense that phenolic material insulates better than aluminum. Are there definitive rules for which to use, I just read single plane/open & dual plane/4 hole. Does one help with high or low rpm more?

Would 1" get me anything on a mild 283 build? Or is this stuff just for the big boys? Sorry to hijack!

I have this exact issue going on!

What is a good one to use with a nitrous plate? Plate is 3/4" tall, intake is an RPM Air Gap. I am in the middle of making a solenoid mount plate and heat shield in one that will go down first, then nitrous plate, then carb. Maybe just add the Holley thick gasket under the heat shield/solenoid plate I make first?

I have a Canton 1" phenolic blended spacer on the 406...

Just FYI, I had similar style carb spacer, I think it was called super sucker with grey material. Anyways at the thin points of the spacer between the bores where it tapers, got progressively weaker as it was being corroded by the gas. Dunno if this was just company specific or what not, got it replaced with the aluminum one free at the local speed shop when they informed me about the phenolic material. Sure enough it was weak after a few months of driving and I could wiggle the center "cone" of the taper due to the corrosion between throttle bores.

I used to run a 1 inch 4 hole on my 327 and liked it. I haven't installed one yet on the BBC, but as soon as it see's regular street time I will be adding one.

i use a moroso phenolic spacer under an ALUMINUM hvh super sucker

the hvh super sucker on the street must be aluminum!!!!!

just seen a pic the other day of a mostly melted one made out of whatever the other material is,they do say "not for street use" stamped right on them!

anyway, yes the phenolic is a huge drop in temp.......

i always ran the same spacers because the best dyno numbers were made with them,

which is a mistake because a dyno doent measure accelleration but a dragstrip does!!

buy a few try a few, each car is different, but you want cool fuel/air ideally.
