People really crack me up when you get into heated discussions about the muscle car erra. I just get a kick out of these guys that read all kinds of crap now they are smart as he** on muscle cars even though you fooled with em all your life ,but you still do not know * about em ! Knowing they probally don`t know a 1/3 as much as what they claim to . Even you are the dumb in their eyes ,knowing you are expressing the correct point of views. Anyone else ever encounter these problems ?

Amen bro ! I feel you on the local car show .Our home town show is just like that .I refuse to go .What got this rant started I was at Hastings myself & her was in the car book section .I had a chevelle book in my hand.It had the gm logo on it with pics of all the differnt body styles of chevelles on the cover She asked how many of them do you have in the yard now .I reply oh aleast a easy 100 or so .When she said yard she meant short for salvage yard. Guy beside me looking at his book thumbing pages with his dish water hands looks up & says no way ! Noone has that many of one make of car , Then he ask me if I really knew anything about cars .Have I had any hands on experence . You can imagine where that conversation went from there

...to take this one a step further, one person who was trying to impress me with his automotive knowledge, and the performance of his imaginary car that has a 3/4 INCH cam. :D

It's always amazing how even original owners get things mixed up. I think we lose too many brain cells as we get older, so at least we have an excuse. Don't get too upset. For the rest, just smile and walk on. Stupid people have a legitimate excuse too.
3/4 race cams were grinds that were somewhere between stock and full race. They didn't have a gadzillion different grinds to choose from in the '50s like we do today.

I used to have a 70 L78 Nova. When I sold it, the buyer said,"Yeah, I was really loking for a 425HP 396 car but 375 is pretty good." I explained that the 375 hp L78 was the highest hp engine GM ever put in the 70 Novas, and this dude kept telling me, "No they made a 425 hp version too". Finally I just said "Hmm, I didn't know that". Didn't want to lose the sale over that B.S.

I think the muscle car crowd develops like kids! When your looking for your first car your a toddler always asking why? Then you get your car and your in the rebellion stage where everyone else is wrong and your always right. Then you start working on it and get to that point were you realize you don't have the answers you need. Then you finish restoring it and your 18 fresh out of school and nobody can tell you what is best, you just have to stumble through and find out for yourself. Then something major breaks that you can't figure out and you go back to those people you thought you new better than and swallow your pride! Normally in the end you have the guy that has had his car and maybe a couple others for a time that know they don't know it all afraid to give advice becouse they realize that way back when they were giving it they were wrong, but now they really do know more than 90% of the other guys out there.

I'm in that stage were I just started working on my project and realized I don't know all that I thought I did when I bought it. So I have found myself regretting things I said when I first bought the car!

Just kinda my opinion on things! What do you all think?

Years ago I had a guy say "I know something not very many people know, I know where two wires are that you can hook together and make a car run without a motor".
He was drunk at the time :D
I'm sure if he told you which 2 wires it was, the oil-companies would have had to kill both of you to keep their conspiracy a secret ;) :D

When I had a retail tire store/muffler shop in the 80's some of my project cars were always sitting around, most of em Corvettes. I got so sick of hearing all the variations of the "my next door neighbor's brother's aunt's son in law answered an ad for a (fill in the date for old) Chevy that an old widow had and when he showed up it was a Corvette and she only wanted (fill in some amount for dirt cheap) and he bought it on the spot. Sometimes the story was modified for the soldier that didn't come back from 'Nam, but it was always about the same. I got to the point of being fairly insulted/insulting when somebody sprang that line of BS on me.

When it happened to be my L88 that was there for several years during the resto, the old stories about the close friend or relative smokin' L88's with his small block powered whatever that had 650 horsepower and was built by Smokey Yunick or some famous Nascar or NHRA type got equally plentiful and annoying.

It was strange how all the tales that sprung up always seemed somehow competitive with whichever one of my car the spinner was viewing. There never seemed to be "my cousin had one of those and it was a nice or fast car", but rather how the same relative had some other brand that was always faster.

Lifting the front wheels was always a favorite of the BS'rs too. All of the cars in the tales would pull the front wheels off the ground and nobody seemed to understand that it was more about traction than horsepower and there ain't much around that'd do it on street tires and std. suspensions.

it is the coil wire and a ground. you hook one to your butt and one to your package. your feet are kicking so fast you dont even need the car to fly down the road, let alone the motor! :)

I had my El Camino in high school and this guy a couple grades lower saw it and claimed his cousin or whatever had one that was so powerful he could put the parking brake on and give it gas and make the front end come off the ground and he could hold it like that for as long as he wanted :clonk:

I wish I could get my hands on some of those 350 big blocks....
I wonder where guys get those.
My biggest pet peeve is that guys think a car's power or acceleration capabilities are ONLY directly related to the size of the car's engine.
Yes, it is true that big inch engines make big power, but I don't think a heavy, stock, smog equipped 454 pickup will outrun an 11 second 406 small block car.

Could the person talking about a Big Block 350 have been talking about the pontiac 350?

Now I don't think this thread was wrote to debate issues, but you are comparing a chicken to a cow! Take you 11 second 406 sbc car and put a 10,000 lb trailer behind it and do the same to that 454 smog equiped stock truck and see who can drive 1000 miles without blowing something up. Displacement does = more "potential power" (A hopped up 350 compared to a stock 396 is not a fair evaluation), but the vehicle using the engine has to come into the equation also (impala to Nova is not fair). In order for your evaluation to be fair you would have to take the same car, say two 66 Chevelles with the tuned tranny and rearend for the engines going in, put you modified 400 sbc in one and then let someone modify a 454 with simular mods as were done to the 400 (ie boring, piston selection, proper cam selection, aluminum heads ....) and then send them down the 1/4 mile! Who do you think is going to win?

3/4 race cams and pop up pistons.

The 283 was the small block, the 350 is the big block.

The Mercury Marauder will outrun anything on the road on the top end (Someone forgot to tell that to the owners of Vipers and Vettes).

Chevy never made a 327 (that person should have been shot on the spot for blasphemy!)
